Buckminster Fuller famously said that to change something, you need to build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. Donella Meadows said that to change paradigms you keep pointing at the anomalies and failures in the old paradigm, and keep coming yourself, loudly and with assurance from the new one. These ideas have influenced the approach we’re taking Centre for Public Impact ANZ - trying to model what different looks like, not just in terms of *what* we work on, but also in terms of *how* we work. But, gosh, it’s hard. It’s hard to centre care and relationships (which requires slow, thoughtful, trust-building work) when the world values efficiency and productivity. It’s hard to justify the choice to stay small as an organisation (because we want to build collaborative partnerships with other actors in the ecosystem rather than increasing our own footprint) when the world values growth. And it’s hard to focus on value creation when the world values profit creation. We’ll keep going because we believe in it so much. But would love to know how others push through the forces which pull so hard in the other direction… — with Keira Lowther Allison Edwards Jessica Fuller and Anika Baset

e.l.f. stands for every eye, lip, and face, even in America’s corporate boardrooms. E.L.F. BEAUTY is only one of four companies who have a board of directors that is two-thirds women and one-third diverse. We think it’s about e.l.f.ing time to “Change the Board Game.” A diverse board not only ensures companies reflect the diverse communities they serve, but it’s also a proven metric to increase the bottom line. And what company doesn’t want more profit? We are taking action to “Change the Board Game,” and helping women and diverse candidates take a rightful seat at the table. We’re kicking things off teaming up with the NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors) and sponsoring 20 brilliantly talented and diverse candidates to enter their “Accelerate Program,” designed to give board-ready candidates the connections, networks, know-how and opportunity they need to join corporate boards across the country. And we’re not stopping there. Stay tuned for big things to come. Tag someone you think is board-ready in the comments (tag yourself if that “someone” is you!), and let’s change the board game together.

I had the opportunity to visit Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park, NY. His leadership wasn’t just about navigating crises like the Great Depression and WWII—it was also about leveraging technology to create progress. His use of radio for "Fireside Chats" built trust with the American people, and his push for rural electrification through the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) transformed entire regions. FDR understood that technology wasn’t valuable for its novelty but for how it solved real problems and empowered people. As business leaders today, we can learn from this: 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺 Like FDR’s radio broadcasts, today’s tools—AI, automation—should enhance human connection, not replace it. Technology should simplify, not complicate. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 Just as the TVA brought electricity to underserved areas, we should focus on technology that addresses specific business challenges, whether improving efficiency or enhancing customer experience. 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 FDR strategically applied innovation with a focus on serving the greater good. In business, adopting new technology should always align with a clear purpose—whether it’s driving growth, addressing pain points, or positively impacting our communities. By innovating with intention, we can create solutions that uplift not just our organizations, but also the communities we serve. FDR’s legacy reminds us that technology’s real power lies in its ability to drive meaningful change.
