Join us for the launch of the 4 Returns Guidebook at COP16Riyadh: 11 Dec. 1-2:30 pm at MET-04 Blue Zone   A holistic landscape approach puts local people at the centre and promotes inclusive governance, land stewardship, economic prosperity and resilience -the five pillars of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. It requires an enabling policy and institutional environment that is open to innovative ways of implementing long-term place-based, systemic thinking, where public funding for holistic landscape restoration is viewed as an investment with multiple returns rather than a cost. Through both stories and practical resources, the guidebook aims to provide landscape practitioners with knowledge, tools and methods needed to achieve land degradation neutrality globally and meet the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The guidebook is the result of a collaborative effort led by Commonland, in partnership with Landscape Finance Lab and Wetlands International, and based on 12 years of lessons learned from our landscape colleagues in several countries including Wij.land, AlVelAl, Living Lands, Wide Open Agriculture, Dirty Clean Food, Grounded, Noongar Land Enterprise Group and others. The event aims to foster discussions and explore how this approach can help to overcome challenges of advancing large-scale holistic landscape restoration that are driven by local people with multiple needs. As countries implement their national and sub-national development plans, landscapes can be leveraged to implement adaptation, ecosystem restoration, drought preparedness and other global commitments in a coherent manner.  Excited to join this exceptional panel alongside Luc M. Building on its trail stewardship program launched in 2023, the Center awarded grants to five Vermont organizations for projects focused on reducing erosion and enhancing trail systems’ abilities to withstand increasing use and severe weather events. Achieving resilient, long-term outcomes from working with local communities is a major global conservation challenge. Genuinely effective approaches are increasingly understood and applied, but they depend on an open and extended process of co-creation with the communities in vulnerable landscapes. The biggest barrier? Accessing the flexible, long-term funding they need. If we are going to make real progress in protecting biodiversity alongside human populations, grant-making practices need to adapt to this way of working. But what does that look like? We have been working with conservation funders and practitioners to draw together a new resource which presents practical guidance on how to disburse funds for community-centred conservation in a way that builds effective, enabling partnerships whilst meeting funders' needs for transparency, budget oversight and impact reporting. We'll launch this new handbook at the end of January - drop me a line if you would like more details.

What would you do if 170 Olympic swimming pools of sewage were dumped in you home? This is what happened to the wildlife of the Albert river and the Broadwater between January and April. The Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation is holding the GC City Council accountable with $2.1 million in planting, weeding and monitoring of the sewage infrastructures. In the picture I am giving an interview for the ABC as Vice President of Wildlife Queensland Gold Coast and Hinterland. We need an independent Environment Protection Authority at State level, a Sustainability Committee at Council level and we all need to play a part in keeping our environment viable. What are You doing for Your environment? Let's stop delegating this to Council, State and Federal bodies. You and me, what are we doing to ensure coexistence? To make life viable for flora and fauna? Think of one tiny change you can make in your life. If you nothing comes to mind, start small. Learn about the wildlife and plants in your area. Attend planting and weeding meetings. Go on nature walks. Learn to love nature. In time, you will protect it. What is something you can do this week for nature?

Another significant element of the Coral Triangle Conservation Fund (CTCF)’s logo, is the stylised image of a hand that also looks like an ocean wave, which holds up the acropora coral and the butterflyfish. This hand signifies that our work at the CTCF goes beyond supporting marine life – we are equally committed to supporting the resilience of the millions of people dependent on marine resources within the Coral Triangle. The hand also embodies our humanity’s responsibility to protect the Coral Triangle, an immensely valuable and vulnerable region.  Moreover, this element represents the collective effort and partnership of communities, stakeholders and individuals in fostering sustainable practices and making positive impacts. The hand signifies care, responsibility and the interconnectedness between people and the ocean, emphasising our commitment to inclusive and equitable conservation efforts. In addition, the logo sits on the name of the CTCF, intentionally forming a triangle to connote the Coral Triangle – the marine area and its biodiversity which we are dedicated to conserving.    The red Acropora coral, butterflyfish, and human hand at the center of our design serve as reminders of the beauty, fragility, and human responsibility toward our invaluable marine ecosystems and the importance of our conservation efforts.  Join us in protecting the Coral Triangle: www.coraltrianglefund.org
