Every year, 12 million hectares of land become unproductive due to #desertification and drought, threatening the livelihoods of more than 1 billion people across 100 countries. Without urgent action, 50 million people are set to be displaced by 2030. Next week, 1000L and our partners from Commonland and UNDP will join governments, businesses, and civil society in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to champion landscape approaches at this year's UNCCD COP16. This year’s theme is “Our Land. Our Future,” is a call to action to propel innovative land management solutions that safeguard land and water resources, support local livelihoods, and preserve biodiversity into the limelight. #Landscape partnerships and Integrated Landscape Management (#ILM) can be powerful drivers of meaningful change when implemented in unison. Over 20 Mata Atlántica Model Forest leaders met last Friday for their first sustainable, inclusive and participatory governance workshop. 🙌 Together, they discussed their landscape's strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats and took steps to engage with territories around participatory, integrated and inclusive socio-environmental governance. 💪 Landscape leaders from the Mata Atlántica Model Forest participate in our Forest Leaders for Integrated Landscape Management Program. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) made this program possible. We also want to thank the International Model Forest Network and Red Latinoamericana de Bosques Modelo for this collaboration.

This week, we're honored to join over 100 landscape leaders across Kenya at the Kenya Landscapes Actors Platform (KenLAP) Platform (KenLap) 2024 Conference as a key partner in showcasing Kenya's landscape restoration initiatives, policies, and strategies! 🌱 The conference theme, "Collaborative Innovation and Knowledge Sharing to Restore and Sustain Kenya's Landscape," set the stage for an inspiring exchange of ideas and solutions. Representing the Rainforest Alliance and drawing experiences from our landscape and certification work are: 🗣️ Marion Nduta, Rainforest Alliance Kenya & Tanzania Country Director 🗣️ Diida Karayu Wario, Team Manager of the Mount Kenya Sustainable Landscape and Livelihoods Program 🗣️ The Mount Kenya Sustainable Landscape Management Board 💡 A key takeaway from our discussions is the need for policies that support farming and forest communities to implement locally-led, nature-based solutions. By placing people and nature at the center of climate action, we can reduce emissions and sequester carbon while delivering meaningful benefits to communities. Many thanks to the partners who have made this collaborative effort possible, including The Rockefeller Foundation, WWF, 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People, WRI Africa, EcoAgriculture Partners, Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO), CGIAR, CIFOR-ICRAF, and World Agroforestry. Together, we’re committed to scaling impactful, sustainable landscape management practices across Kenya. 🤝 #RainforestAlliance #Kenya #MountKenya #LandscapeManagement #ThrivingLandscapes #Sustainability #Certification #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #PeopleAndNature

🌍#COP16Colombia - Our call to action from the sessions: 📌Learning session on Landscape Financing: We live in landscapes, and landscapes live in us. Valuing and investing in regenerative landscapes is essential for a sustainable future. The link between biodiversity and climate resilience has never been clearer, and action has never been more urgent. In the session on Landscape Financing, we were reminded that locally-led solutions must be at the forefront of the biodiversity agenda. 📢 📌Learning session on Moving Finance Forward Together: Biodiversity is foundational to our economy and society. To unlock its full potential, we need bankable solutions, backed by blended finance, to drive these efforts forward.🍃 📌Learning session on Debt-for-Water Swaps: Our water resources and natural environment face challenges from floods, droughts, poor quality, and limited access. Debt crises and water governance issues hinder progress in preserving and restoring ecosystems. It’s crucial to contextualise when and where to apply debt-for-water swaps versus other mechanisms and to adapt standard operating procedures to specific countries, projects, and users.💧 🌱At SNV, we believe that nature is central to climate resilience and food security. However, to scale solutions, we must unlock and mobilise investments that address the unique risks involved. This is where partnerships and innovative financing play a key role.💡 📑 Read our latest brief on SNV's work through the Dutch Fund for Climate and Development’s Origination Facility. It outlines how we’re working with businesses that aim to protect ecosystems and support local communities. This collaboration with private sector actors exemplifies how partnerships can drive climate action and sustainability. #COP16Cali event countdown! Agroecology offers a valuable opportunity that we must embrace now. This event will highlight the wide-ranging benefits that agroecological farming systems can bring, including conserving water, soil, and biodiversity, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and boosting socioeconomic resilience. Additionally, this session will raise awareness of how agroecological practices—such as soil and water conservation, intercropping, crop rotation, and diversification—reduce reliance on pesticides while maintaining crop yields, ensuring farm productivity, and preserving profitability. 24 October - 16:30 local time 📍Dutch Pavilion, Cali, Colombia. Dispatch from #COP16 Cali! EcoAgriculture Partners' senior manager of finance and policy, Juan C. Ramos, presented our finance innovations work at the #COP16Cali event, Operationalizing Landscape Approaches to Ensure We Are on Track With the Biodiversity Plan. There, speakers from the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), IUCN, CDP, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, and others explored how landscape approaches can be incorporated into national biodiversity planning and showcase initiatives that support integrated, 'whole of society' solutions. The robust conversation unearthed several key takeaways: 🌿 Landscape approaches help to achieve all the goals of the GBF - particularly target 3. Indigenous people’s and local communities’ engagement is key. The research coordinated by IPSI and IPBES has sustained this over time. 💵 🤝 Finance and the private sector need to be engaged intentionally and thoughtfully. The emerging work from CDP on reporting related to landscape initiative and the comments from Unilever connected to the Action Agenda on Regenerative Landscapes show us some pathways to engage. 🏞 There’s so much work ongoing to operationalize landscape approaches and fund them. The diversity of approaches from The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), IUCN, HAC for P&N, NBSAP Accelerator and 1000 Landscapes shows this. The strong support from the Japanese government and their biodiversity fund has helped sustain this. 💪🏾 🌐 There's still work to be done to unite more closely as a community of governments and organizations and mobilize this work at the required scale. #COP16Cali #landscapeapproaches #ThinkLandscape #Biodiversity #FinanceforBiodiversity
