Unlocking Innovation: From Concept to Impact with TRIZ It was a quiet afternoon just before the Christmas holidays when my Technology Director, Markus Gersdorff approached me with a critical challenge: "We need a mixing unit that outperforms our current system and can simultaneously mix a minimum of four gases." This complex problem occupied my thoughts, even after I left the office. That evening, while preparing mushroom soup, I realized I had forgotten to add salt. As I stirred the soup to achieve uniform salt distribution, it struck me: how was I ensuring the homogeneity of the mixture? By rotating the spoon left and right, I achieved an even mix. This was my eureka moment. The following day, I dove into developing the concept and evaluating its feasibility. After a week of intense research, design, and simulations, I successfully modeled the gas mixing process. I prepared the prototype for presentation after the New Year, and with guidance from my Department Director , Martin Dauelsberg, validated the results. At the start of the New Year, my Technology Director was impressed with the design, highlighting its significant impact on system performance. He then recommended I undertake TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) training. Although unfamiliar with TRIZ, I quickly embraced its methodologies. Valeri, my TRIZ instructor, always emphasized, "Someone somewhere has already solved this problem (or one very similar to it). Creativity is now finding that solution and adapting it to this problem." This perspective has been transformative. What a difference – almost exactly one year ago I had one of the so far busiest days in my entire career, because hosting the last year's AÖPM Annual meeting at GAW technologies GmbH and AutomationX was a pleasure, but almost felt like running a marathon at the same time - especially when you are the master of ceremonies and constantly have to keep an eye on the clock to make sure everyone sticks to the schedule! ⏳ 🕘 But last Friday at the follow-up event 2024, I was able to just enjoy the program as a visitor. And what a great event it was! The Austrian Graduate Association of Paper Technology Munich gathered in Oberaich and Bruck an der Mur, Austria. The technical lectures and presentations focused on Norske Skog Bruck mill site – in particular the latest investments: The new boiler no. 9 and the large conversion project STRATO - the PM3 rebuilt from newsprint to packaging grades where 210,000 to/y started in the first quarter of 2023. Huge steps towards the reduction of the carbon footprint and the raising of sustainability and productivity goals were achieved with these milestones. 🌍   My colleague Christian Makari and I were very impressed by the self-produced, green energy for the impressive paper machines. These state-of-the-art examples for sustainable and efficient paper making were inspiring and I would like to thank everybody at Norske Skog for these engaging insights. And of course two thumbs up 👍👍 to the organizers of this year’s event – I know exactly how much work this is... 💪 Last but not least a little fun fact: We almost felt like royalty while entering the facility because the pedestrian walk from the parking lot was covered with blossoms from the Japanese cherry trees 🌸 – maybe this is a good idea for the next event that will be hosted by GAW?! 😉   #GAW #event #paperindustry #norskeskog #papermill

🚨 Funding round announcement 🚨 Delighted to announce our investment into DeepForm as part of a £2m funding round, alongside Cambridge Enterprise.   Spun-out of the University of Cambridge, DeepForm’s novel solution can reduce material waste in car manufacturing by over 75%, as well as helping manufacturers reduce CO2 emissions. DeepForm’s solution uses novel 3-D gripping technology and has already been used in carbon reduction studies with six OEMs, reducing trimming scrap by almost 40% in some cases!   Moray Wright, Chief Executive at Parkwalk Advisors, said: “Automobile manufacturers around the world have committed to reach net zero both from tailpipe emissions and manufacturing. DeepForm’s technology has the potential to reduce wastage and emissions from vehicle production, and has wide ranging commercial applications.
