I recently presented to first and second year university students on what is steadily becoming my favourite area to work in - Circular Economy. Shifting to a circular economy can be complex and, if not approached carefully, can inadvertently create more harm than good. My presentation focused on some key principles to consider when developing circular economy solutions: ✨ Whole-of-life circularity - A true circular approach requires consideration of the entire material lifecycle, which can sometimes be overlooked when we focus too heavily on maximising recycled content in initial procurement. A key question to ask is are the materials being used in today's projects able to be recycled or reused at the end of their life? ✨ Dematerialising first - Reducing waste and minimising the need for new materials should always be the first step, lowering our overall demand on resources. Following a waste reduction heirarchy (and applying the same approach for new materials) is a great framework for prioritising circularity solutions. It was great to share some of my learnings with the students, and I'm excited to see how the industry continues to evolve in this space. Arezoo Shirazi

We're releasing our Future Leaders of the Circular Economy Program to all schools for free!🎉 🌟 Project based learning is a research backed method to build character and soft skills, some of the most important skills young people will need to thrive in the future. Character learning goal: “Through dedication, perseverance, and continual improvement, I am committed to driving innovation, promoting sustainability, and creating positive change”. 🌍💪 The program guides students to design their own circular economy solution to a problem in their school through a series of high quality online resources. All program resources are now available for free, including videos explaining the circular economy, design thinking, and a real world case study. 🎬 We've seen schools run the program through extra curriculars, within specific tutor groups, or across an entire school. Time Required: • Weekly 15 minute feedback sessions by tutors/teachers (optional) • 7+ hours that can be completed as homework (or during school hours) over the course of 2-3 months. If you'd like access, message us and we will send you a link to the program for free! Here's a taster of one of our resources explaining the circular economy.

I have completed the course 'Discover the Sustainability Compass' by Compass Education. The Sustainability Compass is a tool that helps educators bring a more holistic approach to sustainability into their teaching, focusing on systems thinking rather than just facts and figures. The Sustainability Compass encourages critical thinking about four key areas: Nature - considering the impact on the environment and how natural systems work. Economy - understanding how economic decisions affect sustainability. Society - exploring the social and cultural implications of sustainability. Wellbeing - focusing on personal and community health and happiness in the context of sustainable living. I look forward to using this model in my teaching and as part of the Sustainability Committee at Fairgreen International School.

Reflection on Completing the Circular Economy MOOC-II The Circular Economy MOOC offered through EdX has been a pivotal addition to my MUEC Master’s curriculum, deepening my understanding of sustainable economic systems and their practical application. It underscored the urgent need to transition from linear models of “take, make, dispose” to a circular approach that prioritizes resource efficiency, waste minimization, and environmental sustainability. Key Insights and Approaches Principles of the Circular Economy: The course introduced the core principles of circularity, focusing on retaining the value of products, materials, and resources for as long as possible. This is achieved through strategies such as: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Maximizing resource utility while minimizing environmental impact. Remanufacturing and Refurbishment: Ensuring that materials and products re-enter the production cycle rather than becoming waste. The Butterfly Diagram: A central concept, the butterfly diagram visually mapped how biological and technical cycles intersect to maximize reuse, repair, recycling, and upcycling. This highlighted how businesses and communities can create value while reducing dependence on virgin resources. Design for Sustainability: Designing products with their end-of-life in mind was a crucial focus. This includes creating modular, repairable, and durable goods to facilitate refurbishment and recycling. Real-world examples, such as Coolrec's innovative recycling of electronic waste, demonstrated how industries can profitably integrate circular principles. Systems Thinking and Global Application: A systems approach broadened my understanding of how interconnected factors—economic, environmental, and social—shape sustainable production and consumption. The course emphasized addressing global challenges like resource scarcity, climate change, and social inequality through collaborative and innovative solutions. Practical Application and Personal Growth Updating my Personal Learning Environment (PLE) with the knowledge from this course has transformed how I approach sustainability. I now actively: Advocate for circular practices in my professional environment, emphasizing sustainable business strategies. Consider the lifecycle impact of the products I use and promote eco-friendly consumption. Empowering Advocacy and Action The Circular Economy MOOC has equipped me with tools to champion sustainability within my community and network. It reinforced the idea that circular economy practices are not just theoretical but actionable pathways toward achieving long-term environmental and economic resilience. By adopting these principles, I feel confident in contributing to a more sustainable future.
