Brené Brown’s insights on vulnerability hit close to home with this quote. Choosing courage over comfort means stepping into the arena, knowing full well that failure may be part of the process. In both leadership and Industrial-Organizational Psychology, vulnerability is often misunderstood, but it is key to creating spaces where people can learn, innovate, and thrive.
We often resist vulnerability, but when we try to avoid discomfort, we also numb joy and fulfillment. Our role as leaders—especially when guiding cross-generational teams—is to model authenticity, encourage growth, and demonstrate that struggle is part of success.
Being in the arena means showing up fully, embracing imperfection, and building resilient workplaces where failure is viewed as an opportunity to grow. The next generation is watching, and our example will shape their approach to courage and leadership.

Over the past five months, I’ve had the privilege of meeting with nearly 100 CPOs and CHROs. Here are the top recurring themes they’re grappling with—and one approach we’ve used to address these challenges:

The title of this video grabbed me as I head to the big 5-0 next year, but I shouldn't have been surprised that this video held much more. The message on vulnerability, emotion, and facing criticism struck a chord.
