No matter what religion you follow, or even if you don't follow any, real estate investors, developers, brokers, and contractors may have reasons to go to church. They often own additional properties, or have plenty of land surrounding the actual gathering point. Some own single-family homes which they rent to employees and helpers at greatly reduced rates. For them, it's not always about cash flow. You never know how you might be able to help meet demands for affordable housing and benefit from it. Rocky Mountain Community Reinvestment Corporation has provided $6,377,621 in permanent financing for the new construction of East 72 Apartments in Midvale, Utah. This multifamily development supports the community by providing 89 units for households earning between 25% - 50% of the area median income (AMI). 40% of the units will be subsidized via a federal rent subsidy. 5 units will be set aside to serve those exiting homelessness, there will be 10 ADA units, 5 units set aside for disabled residents, and 5 units will be set aside to serve domestic violence survivors. Service providers for these set aside units include organizations with long standing relationships with Housing Connect that include The Road Home, YMCA, South Valley Services, and Utah Independent Living Center. We extend our deepest appreciation to Housing Opportunities, Inc., which operates as the nonprofit development entity through Housing Connect, the sponsor/developer of this project, in collaboration with Chelsea Investment Corporation, The Richman Group, Zions Bank, The Utah Housing Corporation, Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund, Salt Lake County, Redevelopment Agency, Housing Opportunities, Inc., American Rescue Plan Act, and energy rebates from Rocky Mountain Power and Dominion Energy. A Troubling Possibility: Are Veterans Being Sacrificed for Real Estate Profits? In the heart of West Los Angeles, a disturbing pattern is emerging—one that suggests the possibility of a calculated scheme involving city officials, wealthy developers, and administrators of the West LA VAMC and Grant Per Diem programs. Could they be orchestrating the appearance of dereliction and overpopulation of homeless encampments around the VA grounds to devalue real estate and pave the way for private investors to swoop in? The signs are hard to ignore. Seven city blocks surrounding the West LA VA appear increasingly neglected, with homelessness visibly concentrated in this area. Meanwhile, solutions that could address veteran homelessness are either ignored or actively undermined. Buildings that could provide shelter are demolished or left unused. Bureaucratic inaction persists, creating a worsening crisis that feels almost intentional. If this is part of a broader agenda to depress property values and shift control of VA grounds to private investors, it represents a betrayal of the highest order. The very land meant to serve our nation’s heroes is being weaponized against them, turning their struggles into a tool for profit. Our veterans deserve better. They deserve leaders who prioritize their well-being over private interests. The community must demand transparency and accountability from those in power. We must not allow the sacrifice of those who served this country to become collateral damage in a real estate grab. The question remains: Who is truly benefitting from this crisis, and at what cost to the heroes we promised to care for?

I'm a big advocate for building new housing. I've developed housing on church land in the past and I have a number of projects in the pipeline currently. Some of the churches in our RootedGood Good Futures Accelerator are developing affordable housing as a way to serve their community. BUT developing housing on church land is not a magic solution. It is far from easy. It isn't always the best idea for use of church land. And most of all, it is not the responsibility of churches alone to solve our nation's affordable housing crisis. Great report on housing and what is happening locally. There is little doubt that with 1) folks living longer, 2) less traditional families and more one parent households…creating a need for two roof tops vs one, 3) a large influx of people into this country seeking asylum (economic opportunity) and 4) Air BnB eating up 1% of housing stock and growing…that housing availability is a challenge. As demand grows and supply stays flat….prices will continue to push up for the foreseeable future.

As I was viewing the videos, I was amazed how he showed his vulnerable & authentic self as he shared his personal story in his journey, showing his drive & ability to overcome any obstacles with integrity & kindness. He is a perfect example of a leader who leads in his authentic way & being true to himself. A real promising role model who had no reason other than his pure heart. The 12 Neighbours Community was his attempt to synthesize all that he learned in each place & apply it to his community. When describing the pillars the community sits on, Lebrun uses three words: Dignity, Community, & Opportunity. Mr. Lebrun is the kind of authentic role model we need to see in far greater numbers. He is a source of inspiration to all of us. Lebrun feels that a community like Fredericton shouldn’t have chronically homeless individuals. He feels there is a need for a shift in mindset. Many view homelessness as the result of a drug or mental health issue, but in reality, it is a housing & homelessness problem. That final house, civic No. 93, represents the fulfilment of a dream for Lebrun but there's still lots of work to be done. That includes completing the community centre and café, as well as landscaping every one of the 96 properties.   But for now, he says it's a good feeling being able to see that final home in place. Mr. Marc Lebrun is a perfect example of a man that demonstrated that it can be accomplished successfully. Our politicians, Mayor Olivia Chow, Premier Doug Ford, PM Trudeau, Minister of Housing, Paul Calandra & the list goes on can learn so much from Mr. Lebrun.  It appears that Mr. Lebrun accomplished the success of 12 Neighbours - 96 tiny homes, start to finish, in two years instead of 4 years. Perhaps our politicians can explore the many possibilities & upcoming projects & see if we can mirror & replicate what Lebrun successfully accomplished in Fredericton?  We can show it doesn’t need to be inevitable but inspire everyone that homelessness can be ended.
