"Afrotech is the future of the civil rights movement" This is what NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in the opening fireside chat with Afrotech Founder Morgan DeBaun The chat was an urgent call to action for the times that we're in. Here's what I think Derrick's words mean for us as tech leaders 1. Every business is a tech business 2. Every job is a tech job 3. Every political outcome has tech influence and tech implications 4. Afrotech helps tech leaders do more, get better, earn more 5. This helps companies do more, get better, earn more 6. This helps communities do more, get better, earn more 7. Communities create more equity, sustainable innovation, prosperity, health 8. These are also precisely what civil rights movements help achieve 9. And this is why "Afrotech is the future of the civil rights movement" I think Morgan's and Derrick's chat was both timeless and timely It was also courageous and inspiring As someone I know always says: We need to do well and do good If you found this helpful, please give it a like Thank you Photo From Afrotech Website - "Benjamin Esakof/Halo Creative for AfroTech / L-R Derrick Johnson, president and CEO, NAACP, and Morgan DeBaun, co-founder and CEO, Blavity - Afrotech 2024 in Houston, TX."

Determination and Consistency: The Power Duo for Your Tech Journey! At our last Pompey Tech and Professional Forum Harry Salami detailed his journey into web design and software engineering. His determination and consistent learning in an unprecedented and unconventional time when the world was in chaos made him one of the tech voices in Portsmouth and United Kingdom today. The tech world is not just about understanding algorithms or mastering the latest frameworks, or jumping on new trends—it’s about persistence. Determination gives you the courage to face the unknown, and consistency ensures that you keep moving forward, even when progress feels slow. Together, they’re your greatest allies in overcoming obstacles, learning from failures, and building skills that last a lifetime. Think of your journey like building a skyscraper. Each line of code, each debugged error, each failed product is another brick laid toward something extraordinary. Some days the progress may seem invisible, but brick by brick, the foundation of greatness is being built. It’s not about giant leaps—it’s about showing up, learning, and striving daily to be better than yesterday. The true magic lies in your commitment to the process. The road ahead may not always be smooth, but remember: breakthroughs often come after moments of doubt. Trust in your vision, stay consistent, and let your determination guide you. The tech world is full of endless possibilities, and with persistence, you can carve out your unique space in it. Keep going—your success story is already in the making. At Portsmouth Tech and Cultural Hub we are determined on building the tech ecosystem in the beautiful city of Portsmouth with consistent drive in Innovation through collaboration with other great visionary organisations within the great city. The tech sector has delivered some amazing inventions but sometimes they miss the mark. Here Patrick Boyle shares examples of tech entrepreneurs inventing things that already exist and some things that should not exist. It’s important that as a sector we retrain our humility. Please enjoy. https://lnkd.in/g_ikGn8M

Hold Onto Your Briefcase: New York State Ethics Opinion 1277 Has Landed! Topic: Crowdfunding on behalf of indigent clients A non-profit criminal defense organization may use GoFundMe, and the like, to raise funds for indigent clients. The financial assistance must be given as gifts, not loans, and must not be used as an inducement for client retention or continuation of the lawyer-client relationship. Relevant Rules: Rule 1.8(e): Allows non-profit organizations to provide financial assistance to indigent clients under the "humanitarian exception," provided: Funds come from sources other than those raised for legal services. Assistance covers basic needs (e.g., food, rent, medicine) and does not create financial obligations for the client. Rule 1.6(a): Protects client confidentiality; the organization must ensure GoFundMe postings do not disclose confidential, embarrassing, or detrimental information without informed consent. Rule 1.9(c): Extends confidentiality obligations to former clients. Conditions for Assistance: Assistance must not be promised before retaining the client or used to encourage continuation of the attorney-client relationship. Lawyers must discuss potential adverse effects (e.g., tax implications, impact on government benefits) with clients before providing assistance. Confidentiality Considerations: Ensure GoFundMe campaigns do not reveal confidential or privileged information without the client’s informed consent. Protect client privacy even after the lawyer-client relationship ends. Non-profit criminal defense organizations may use crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe to assist indigent clients with living expenses post-incarceration, as long as assistance complies with ethical rules, maintains client confidentiality, and avoids creating financial dependency or inducements.

This is a call to all start ups in the assistive technology and accessibility fields and VCs who are interested in these fields. If you’re looking to funding, feedback from the community or networking with like/minded individuals, I would like to invite you to apply for the Ignite Accessibility Pitch Competition organized by the Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Why Attend? Entrepreneurs Participating in a pitch competition offers visibility for accessibility-focused products and services, opening doors to investments, grants, and other financial resources necessary for further development and commercialization. Investors Some investors mistakenly believe that the accessibility market is too small. Attendees will challenge this notion, uncovering the enormous potential, with aggregated spending power projected to reach an astounding $13 trillion in the coming years. Application deadline is Aug 31st. For more information or to apply, please visit https://lnkd.in/grBVMaWz. I’m excited to be helping on this potentially transformational project.
