What is the current state of the legal talent market? Recent articles in the legal press give reasons for both hope and despair. In an interview by David Lat, Adam Oliver, Managing Director at NALSC: the National Association of Legal Search Consultants Bronze Sponsor Firm Prospects, LLC provides a reality check backed by hard numbers. He says: “I think that there are three factors indicating that law firm hiring in 2024 could outpace what we tracked in 2023, particularly in M&A and capital markets: (i) entry-level hiring numbers into corporate groups are up; (ii) Q4 of 2023 saw more experienced attorney hires at the associate level than we’ve tracked since 2022; and (iii) we’ve already tracked well over 1,100 new law firm job listings in 2024, 140 of them for corporate attorneys.” He added, “How quickly hiring picks up, however—or whether it does at all—will be determined in part by broader economic and political factors.” See the entire interview here: https://buff.ly/4aeHP1o These numbers were as of the end of January 2024. I'm in a sharing mood today, so let's pull back the curtain a bit and dive in to 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐈 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. Let's be real - 𝒃𝒂𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒔𝒕. During my practice career, I dealt with plenty of recruiters who may have been well intentioned, but simply didn't add value to my legal searches. This very often resulted in frustration, resentment, and most importantly, lack of success. So I can understand why some attorneys are wary of working with legal recruiters. When you receive calls and messages selling opportunities that aren't even in your practice area, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence. 𝑯𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈. When I walked away from private practice and decided to join Sonder Consultants, it wasn't just because I saw an industry where someone who was a genuine value-add could have success. It was because I wanted to give attorneys the opportunity to have a fruitful conversation with someone who actually spoke the legal language... someone who could empathize with the struggles and successes that are so unique to the legal profession... someone who understood the nuances of the vast and complex legal market. I wanted to use the knowledge and skills that I'd built up during my tenure in law and beyond to actually listen to, understand and assess each individual's situation. Then--appreciating that no two attorneys' wants, needs and goals are the same--work in partnership with them to build a 𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥 road map to a much more fulfilling place. The law demands a lot of attorneys as it is, so if you feel like you may not be in the right place, I think you owe it to yourself to at least try to find that fulfillment elsewhere.
