What you don't see in a case study Behind every polished case study lies the real work—the messy, human, and deeply collaborative process that makes transformation possible. Working hand-in-hand with the incredible team at El Observador was an experience unlike any other. We didn't just design; we dug deep. At times, our sessions felt like group therapy—challenging each other, breaking preconceptions, exploring new approaches, and navigating high-stakes moments. There was laughter, tough decisions, and growth on both sides. None of this would have been possible without El Observador's team's trust in us. And let's be honest: trust is no small thing. Delegating, sharing control, and allowing others to shape your vision is one of the hardest things to do, no matter how simple it might seem. We knew we had to rise to the occasion at every step to be worthy of that trust. And as I look back, I couldn't be prouder of the lupa studio team for showing up in every way possible. A huge thank you to the fantastic El Observador team. Your commitment and courage made all the difference, and being part of this journey was a privilege. #Rebranding #DesignStrategy #VisualIdentity #DigitalTransformation #media
With this refreshed identity, El Observador is now poised for global growth, positioning itself as the go-to source of quality journalism for the Spanish-speaking community worldwide. Without trust - you don't have a product! I agree with Sinead Boucher, that media has a role to play in any society, however as fine you you may think the product/s you are producing are , your customers don't trust the current growing style of news and journalists. The recent NZ study findings show trust in news in general fell significantly from 42% in 2023 to 33% (-9%) in 2024 and the proportion of those who actively avoid the news to some extent grew from 69% in 2023 to 75% (+6%) in 2024". from - Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand report, authored by Dr Merja Myllylahti and Dr Greg Treadwell. Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand To remain relevant news/journalists need to address "trust" or continue on the path of tabloid media.
Whether you watched or read Newshub's very fine journalism over the years, it was working for you nonetheless. Asking the questions of the powerful, shining a light on life in Aotearoa, these are activities that benefit everyone all of the time, and they are critical to our society. We have many friends and colleagues among those affected today. Some of the best journalists New Zealand has produced, worked or trained at Newshub. I hope some of them will join us at Stuff in coming months. Their passion and commitment to strong, independent reporting without fear or favour was a bedrock of the Newshub brand. The same can be said for many excellent journalists hearing similar news at TVNZ this week. We'll all be the poorer without their work. https://lnkd.in/gUsn4C9c

I have a journalism degree and was taught that without freedom of the press, we have no democracy. Like it or not, long form (and for the fruit fly attention spans - short form) video + podcast from engaging, unfiltered, opinionated thinkers is the future - not media, not journalism. It will be biased. It will be polarizing. The best we can do? Teach children how to be critical thinkers. Teach children how to be kind. Teach children how to handle conflict and have difficult conversations. Teach children how to value all humans. Where do we have a playbook for this? Finland. It can be done.

🎙 New podcast episode: We spoke to Sam Tranum, Deputy Editor and co-founder of the Dublin Inquirer, an independent, reader-supported local newspaper based in Dublin, Ireland. Initially inspired by alt-weeklies seen while working together in the US, co-founder Lois Kapila decided setting up a local news organisation was the best opportunity for doing the kind of journalism she wanted to do. "We took all our savings and we borrowed money from our families, and we got together enough money to start for six months" Nine years later they are still going, with about 2,000 subscribers providing 95% of their revenue, and a string of awards such as the European Press Prize and innovative community engagement projects such as the Citizens Agenda behind them, with their impact far exceeding the size of their small newsroom. But despite these successes, like many independent media in Europe, they are still struggling to find long-term sustainability for their journalism which aims to deliver real value to their local communities. To hear more about their journey and how they're navigating the sustainability question, listen to this episode of the Loop: 🎧 https://lnkd.in/eVZiHZjU ––––– In each episode of The Loop we interview a member of Reference - the European Independent Media Circle, as they share their challenges, and what success and sustainability looks like for them today. This episode is hosted by journalist Margarida David Cardoso. The Loop podcast is produced by Fumaça and Átlátszó Erdély, as part of the Journalism Value Project, a collaboration between Reference - the European Independent Media Circle, Netzwerk Recherche, Investigate Europe, Fumaça, and Átlátszó Erdély. This is a project run by and for non-profit independent media organisations. Our mission with the Journalism Value Project is to help independent media in Europe to become more sustainable, through finding out what’s working, what’s not, to share and learn from these insights, and to advocate for more support where we need it.
