Here’s a project we’re delighted to see get off the ground: a new bio-inputs initiative to empower smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and overseen by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) , the project will help unleash the potential of bio-inputs, the microbial-based products like our own LEGUMEFiX. “These improve soil health, increase nutrient availability, enhance crop yields, boos farmer incomes, and improve the efficiency, productivity and profitability of African smallholder farming systems in the face of a changing climate,” says Bernard Vanlauwe, IITA Deputy Director General. https://lnkd.in/ekaEnmNU Legume Technology has itself long been active in sub-Saharan Africa, with products already used in more than 14 countries. Keep tuned for some exciting news of our own on this same topic… #africanagriculture #smallholderagriculture #sustainableagriculture #agriculturaldevelopment #climatechange #bioinputs #inoculants #legumes

During a recent visit to South Africa, our team encountered one of the most innovative and sustainable agricultural practices that will undoubtedly blow your mind – hydroponics farming. For those who may not be familiar, hydroponics involves growing plants without soil, with nutrient-rich water solutions delivering essential minerals directly to the roots. Utilizing inert growing mediums like perlite or coconut coir, this method offers precise control over conditions, potentially leading to faster growth and increased yields compared to traditional soil-based agriculture. At UVG, where our mission revolves around sustainable practices, particularly in agriculture, we were captivated by the possibilities hydroponics presents. We thrive by supporting and engaging with initiatives that promote such practices in Africa, contributing to the wheels of sustainability turning with momentum. #UVG #sustainableagriculture

How can we better support smallholder farmers’ transition to agroecological practices, given the risk of lower crop yields in the initial years of transition? The DeiMeas (Golden Soil) initiative seeks to tackle this issue by creating a transition financing mechanism to incentivise farmers to make the switch. Implemented by the Department of Agricultural Land Resources Management (DALRM), and supported by Swisscontact, CIRAD, and SmartAgro, this mechanism would provide short-term financial rewards to smallholder farmers in Cambodia for implementing agroecological practices. QAI is supporting the pilot for the DeiMeas initiative, which aims to realise the following positive outcomes: 🧑🌾 More than 150 farmers onboarded, covering 500 hectares of cropland 🌍 2,000 tCO2e sequestered or avoided 🌱 Better soil quality 💰 Long-term improvements in farm profitability and farmer livelihoods Find out more about DeiMeas here: https://lnkd.in/gPD2JBTg #ClimateChangeAction #ClimatePhilanthropy #Agroecology #Cambodia #TransitionFinancing
