I'm feeling a little reflective today.🧠 We've all heard of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, but I'd like to introduce another powerful framework that shapes how we approach life and decision-making: The 6 Core Drivers of Fulfillment & Behavior These needs influence everything we do, from our relationships to our careers and personal development. 1. Certainty: The comfort of knowing what to expect, giving us a sense of stability and control. 🔒 2. Variety: The excitement of new experiences and challenges that keep life dynamic and engaging. 🎢 3. Significance: Feeling that we matter, that we’re unique, and that we have a purpose to fulfill. 🌟 4. Love & Connection: Our deep need for relationships, to be part of something greater, and to feel connected to others. ❤️🤝 5. Growth: The drive to keep learning, evolving, and becoming the best version of ourselves. 🌍💡 6. Contribution: The desire to give back, to make a positive impact on others and the world around us. 🌍💡 These six needs form the foundation of how we approach life and make decisions (whether in our personal lives or professional careers). While our experiences, particularly traumatic or challenging ones, have a significant impact on shaping who we are, they do not ultimately define us. Instead, it is the meaning we assign to these experiences that determines how they influence our lives and personalities. Human beings have the power to choose how they interpret and respond to their past. It acknowledges that difficult experiences, such as calamities or childhood abuse, undoubtedly have strong effects on a person's development. However, these experiences do not have the final say in determining the course of one’s life. We are not passive recipients of the consequences of our experiences. Instead, we actively create the narrative of our lives by choosing how to understand and integrate these experiences. This perspective suggests that by changing the meaning we give to our past, we can alter its impact on our present and future. Let us embrace proactive approach to life, where we take responsibility for the way we live, regardless of the circumstances we have faced. 🧐 When was the last time you truly felt appreciated? For me, there are two things at play when we are: 1. We have been genuinely seen by those we care about—partners, friends, mentors. 2. We truly let that recognition sink in. For many men, one or both of these pieces can be incredibly tough. In my experience, many men are conditioned to power through, brushing off praise or acknowledgment, and rarely stopping to recognize their own worth. This happened recently with a coaching client who shared how a toxic environment had eroded his confidence. Even with all the progress he’d made in our time together, he still felt he hadn’t done “enough.” At the end of our session, I reflected back to him the strength I saw in him. But I noticed a hint of doubt in his eyes, almost as if he didn’t trust what I was saying. So, I repeated it. I looked him directly in the eyes and asked him to really hear it. And then, at some point, I saw a weight lift—a moment when he finally took in his own worth. It was a reminder of why this work matters—why it’s so powerful for men to practice acknowledgment and to hear it from others. Men’s work isn’t just about sharing struggles; it’s about building each other up, helping each other see our true value. This week, try offering a moment of acknowledgment to someone who might find it hard to see their own value. 🚀 Feeling like an imposter sometimes? Me too! So let's chat about self-doubt and negativity Here's the deal: self-doubt and negative thoughts used to run the show in my life and career - loops of negative overthinking 😵. Ever felt stuck, like no matter what you do, things just don’t change?  (Here’s the science behind why it happens) In the 1960s, psychologist Martin Seligman discovered something powerful:   When we face repeated negative experiences that we can't control, we stop trying—even when a solution is right in front of us. He called this Learned Helplessness. A quick story:   I once worked with someone who was incredibly talented, but after facing constant rejection, she stopped talking to her manager for her promotion. She felt helpless, convinced that nothing would change. It wasn't about her skills, but about the belief that her efforts didn’t matter anymore. What can we learn from this?   Just like those dogs in Seligman’s experiments, we sometimes give up too early or don't even try because we’ve been burned by past failures. How to overcome learned helplessness: 1. Change your mindset: Understand that setbacks are temporary, not permanent. 2. Hope I got into my reading yesterday at chapter 6, that I wanted to change the usual posting to this where I feel strongly, has bearings to our leadership competency. I quote from Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence (chapter 6). “People tend to differ in the general degree to which they have hope in this sense. Some typically think of themselves as able to get out of a jam or find ways to solve problems, while others simply do not see themselves as having the energy, ability, or means to accomplish their goals. People with high leves of hope, Snyder finds, share certain traits, among them being able to motivate themselves, feeling resourceful enough to find ways to accomplish their objectives, reassuring themselves when in a tight spot that things will get better, being flexible enough to find different ways to get to their goals or to switch goals if one becomes impossible, and having the sense to break down a formidable task into smaller, manageable pieces. From the perspective of emotional intelligence, having hope means one will not give in to overwhelming anxiety, a defeatist attitude, or depression in the face of difficult challenge and setbacks . Indeed, people who are hopeful evidence less depression than others as they maneuver through life in its pursuit of their goals, are less anxious in general, and have fewer emotional distresses.” It’s a powerful two paragraph, as I assess my life and leadership in general, having a positive expectation (or hope) brings that beacon of hope to teams on the expectation for the future. It also has strong connections to our resiliency - in times of uncertainty or VUCAH (as covered previously).
