Dredging is a challenging task in port engineering.
WHAT A SEND OFF! After two years widening our shipping channels in Cleveland Bay, the time has come to bid backhoe dredge Woomera farewell. Woomera has removed 3.4 million cubic metres of material from the channel, bringing 2572 barge loads back to our new reclamation area as part of our $251 million Channel Upgrade project. Our contractors spent about 680,600 hours on the dredging campaign, which has widened the channel from 92m to 180m at the Port end, tapering to 120m offshore. This will allow larger ships up to 300m long to safely access the Port. While Woomera is setting sail, works on the project will continue until mid-year.

As part of our comprehensive advice and planning service, we offer guidance at every stage of the process whether this is for potential marine investors or for those looking to make better use of one they already own. The Firco team is experienced in identifying marine assets where value can be added by increasing mooring capacity, utilising storage space or adding accommodation and catering facilities. We are also able to assist with finding the right site and negotiating the lease on behalf of clients. Through careful mapping and planning, it is often possible to significantly increase the mooring capabilities of your marina or boatyard. We work closely with our clients, taking into account their business objectives, to produce a comprehensive strategy to help them do this. We aim to identify all the improvements that can be made that will boost profitability and can advise on how to take advantage of underutilised land through additions such as installing container storage or providing ancillary services to mooring licensees. Nice project and good for you
𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗻 The last months, Boskalis deployed heavy machinery in the access channel to Southampton's container port. The world's largest backhoe dredger Magnor and trailing suction hopper dredger Causeway worked closely together to widen and deepen the channel in the south of the United Kingdom. The Magnor was assisted by Boskalis' pusher tugs Union Topaz and Union Onyx, which transported the dredged material from the Magnor to the offshore disposal site with the Terraferre 501 and Terraferre 502. A perfect example of close cooperation. At about 200 meters wide, the access channel to the Port of Southampton is by no means very narrow. But as the port is looking to grow and continue to accommodate the largest container ships in the future, Boskalis Westminster has widened the access channel on behalf of the Port of Southampton. In this way, Boskalis’ capital dredging work directly contributes to keeping one of the UK's largest container ports accessible to accommodate for world trade. In #2023 we decided that #Inland #Navigation within the #UnitedKingdom would be a great additional service to add to our extending capabilities so we set about making a plan to first of all prove the concept, and then roll it out to our clients - #InlandRivers connected to the #RiverHumber seemed the obvious place to start. After months of discussions, chasing ideas and solutions, it seemed we finally came up with a viable plan to get things moving. Working collectively, we got #Kingsferrywharf up and running and this is planned to be the transhipment #Hub for our Sea going coasters to call, and then tranship into #Barges for further inland delivery. #Route1 is planned, its ready to start, we await the final approval for the base cargo and then this route will be up and running. It is however clear that to make it a success, we need to add more routes. We have discussed with some authorities who need further encouragement, but we are ready with private investment to get this project going - so if you have any berth facilities / suitable development land which can be leased in a desirable location which is viable for a #Barge to call, and it connects eventually to the #Humber, please reach out to chartering@casperchartering.com and we are seeking any suggestions or solutions to improve our route offering. #shipping #inlandwaterways #barge #routeplanning #cargo Canal & River Trust #CBOA #projectshipments #bulkcargo #environment
