Anxiety in children: Is it more than worry? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 8 children in the UK suffer from an anxiety disorder. While some level of worry is a natural part of childhood, parents and guardians need to decide whether a child’s concerns are a typical response to everyday stressors or indicative of developmental anxiety. By understanding the differences, parents and guardians can provide the necessary support and seek appropriate interventions, such as creating a nurturing environment that encourages an open dialogue about worries and anxieties. Validating a child’s feelings can go a long way in making them feel listened to and understood. There are also effective psychological interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), an evidence-based talking therapy recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of anxiety. In 1983, the Mental Health Act (MHA) was produced to guide how we assess and treat people with severe mental health issues. It serves both as a guide for best practices and as a crucial safeguard for people during vulnerable moments in their lives. But what does this look like in practise today, 40 years later? As I begin my career in the health and social care sector, this has been a particularly important foundation for my understanding and approach to practice in the NHS. This info-booklet I put together outlines the lessons I have learnt surrounding this. I hope you can learn something from it too! #MentalHealthMatters #EqualityInCare #WellbeingForAll #psychology #NHS #development #growth #legal #clinicalpsychology
