Yesterday, I hosted the Matrix Marketing Forum at CloudZone with some of the industry’s sharpest marketers. The main topic was 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, the kind that makes people stop, look twice, and say, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming.” During my session, I shared my go-to framework for every new marketing project—a set of questions that guides my creative process: 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? Playing it safe doesn’t inspire. How could we create something that truly surprises? It’s all about discovering an angle that captures real attention. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗳 𝗯𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼? Thinking big opens the door to bold, memorable ideas that we can later adapt to fit any budget. 𝟯. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹? A brand cannot live by CREATIVE alone. That's right, no matter how much I preach the power of good creative (because most people don't get it). The creative needs two things to drive growth at a company. 1) An incredible product. Great creative and a bad product just helps you fail faster. 2) Performance support aligned with Creative. They need to know how to strategically test and deploy great creative and how to give the Creative team feedback, not binary "it works" or "it doesn't work" but HOW it's "working" or "not-working". Our super-secret-sauce at Creatably isn't that we make the funniest ads, but it's that second-by-second performance principles deeply inform them. We never "finish" an ad, we modify creative assets as we see how they perform (or fail to perform). Feed a Creative team good data, and you'll get some happy results. Build a virtuous cycle where Performance and Creative feed each other and you will see exponential growth.
