What I lack in expertise, I make up for in thoroughness. While I've been recruiting in the insurance industry for a while now, I will never pretend to be an insurance SME. The people I work with are the experts in that field. You might ask- "Josh, if you're not an insurance expert, how can you be a valuable Recruiter within the space?" Well there would be a couple things to say to that- 1) I might not be an "expert" but I've gained enough knowledge to have a fluid conversation with someone- and I'm learning more every day! 2) No, I don't know how to use the agency management systems, and I might not know the minute differences between an Account Manager and an Account Executive (honestly, who does these days.) That said, here's the reality- I'm not going to be using EPIC. I just need to have the wherewithal to ask you about your EPIC experience. From there, I just have to be able to write fast. Can I see the value in having actually worked in Insurance and having a theoretical understanding of it? Of course I can. However, I feel that so many people and companies get caught up in only working with Recruiters that "specialize' in their industry that they don't even stop to question if that Recruiter has mastered the actual recruiting part of the job. So just remember that if you're working with a "specialized" Recruiter within your industry- they might be able to understand all the nooks and crannies of your experience, but that doesn't mean they're a good communicator who knows how to both present and leverage your experience in the interview process. Industry knowledge is great, but it doesn't matter if you can't trust the Recruiter to relay your information effectively and communicate thoroughly throughout the process.
