We're thrilled to announce the publication of our latest study lead by University of Florida on the innovative CSI-D+ system in Smart Agriculture Technology! This work showcases a groundbreaking advancement in the early detection of Citrus Black Spot (CBS) caused by the pathogenic fungi Phyllosticta citricarpa and Phyllosticta capitalensis. Utilizing state-of-the-art fluorescence imaging technology and the deep learning YOLOv8 framework, the CSI-D+ system has proven highly effective in identifying these fungal threats on citrus leaves with an accuracy of 96.97% for CBS detection and an impressive mean average precision (mAP@50) of 97.82%. Early detection during the asymptomatic phase is critical to halting the spread of this quarantine disease in regions like Florida. With this tool, grove managers can take action early, safeguarding crops, reducing chemical usage, and promoting sustainable agriculture practices. Clinglobal has teamed up with key opinion leaders from the #AnimalHealthIndustry and #ResearchInstitutes to discuss challenges and opportunities for performing #ResearchAndDevelopment in and for #LMIC.    Addressing #AnimalHealth in low and middle-income countries is critical for the survival and wellbeing of #smallholder #farmers and their families, and has a significant epidemiological impact on #AMR, #parasite #resistance, #zoonosis and #infectiousdiseases.    The challenges to develop and register #VMP in LMIC are significant, but we are so are the opportunities. 📃Scientific paper: Isolation and characterization of bacteriophages for combating multidrug-resistant Listeria monocytogenes from dairy cattle farms in conjugation with silver nanoparticles Abstract: Background This study aims to achieve biocontrol of multidrug-resistant Listeria monocytogenes in dairy cattle farm s which poses a severe threat to our socio-economic balance and healthcare systems. Methods Naturally occurring phages from dairy cattle environments were isolated and characterized, and the antimicrobial effect of isolated L. monocytogenes phages (LMPs) against multidrug-resistant L. monocytogenes strains were assessed alone and in conjugation with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Results Six different phenotypic LMPs (LMP1–LMP6) were isolated from silage ( n  = 4; one by direct phage isolation and three by enrichment method) and manure ( n  = 2; both by enrichment method) from dairy cattle farms. The isolated phages were categorized into three different families by transmission electron microscopy (TEM): Siphoviridae (LMP1 and LMP5), Myoviridae (LMP2, LMP4, and LMP6), and Podoviridae (LMP3). The host range of the isolated LMPs was determined by the spot method using 22 multidrug-resistant L. monocytogenes strains. All 22 (100%) strains were susceptible to phage infection; 50% (3 out of 6) of the isolated phages showed narrow host ranges, while the other 50% showed moderate host ranges. We found that LMP3 (the phage with the shortest tail) had the ability to infect the widest range of L. monocytogenes strains. Eclipse and latent periods of LMP3 were 5 and 45 min, respectively. The burst size of LMP3 was 25 PFU per infected cell. LMP3 was stable with wid... Yesterday, Hélène Collignon represented EBIC as a panel member in a workshop hosted by Qlab. This workshop focused on the ongoing technical study on the inclusion of new materials in Component Material Category 10 (Animal By-Products) of the EU's Fertilising Product Regulation. This workshop was an excellent opportunity for EBIC to continue our engagement with the European Commission and QLab on this critical issue, raise some industry concerns, and hear from other industry and academic experts. Hélène’s presentation at this workshop was another chance for EBIC to bring our members’ expertise in the use of animal by-products in fertilising products to QLab and DG GROW to inform the elaboration of this study.    Missing animal by-products are just one example of a regulatory barrier that currently prevents the realisation of a European #CircularEconomy in the plant nutrition sector. Biostimulants containing component materials derived from animal by-products, such a hydrolysed proteins and insect frass, have an important role to play in building Europe’s #FoodSecurity. The EU must prioritise reducing regulatory barriers and ensuring policy coherence, such as with animal by-products, to help facilitate the transition to a sustainable, competitive, and food secure future for Europe.    EBIC members interested in this topic are encouraged to contact Hélène and the EBIC secretariat for further details.

This recent research on Black Soldier Fly larvae (BSFL) showcases the potential to adapt the nutritional biomass for animal feed. The study reveals that the lipid profile of BSFL significantly changes based on their diet, making them highly adaptable for all sorts of feed applications. Key findings include: ➜Diet influences lipid fractions and fatty acid profiles. ➜BSFL can synthesize beneficial fatty acids not present in their diet. ➜Nutritional characteristics can be tailored by modifying substrates. Can maternal diet modifications improve piglet health? Can altering the nutrition of sows directly impact the quality of colostrum, leading to healthier and stronger piglets? Amara Benn, a PhD student in Dr. Carolyn Slupsky's Lab at the University of California, Davis and an Eary College Researcher (ECR) in the Nutrition Pillar at PIG-PARADIGM, is exploring these critical questions. Her research focuses on enhancing piglets' intestinal barriers before weaning by adjusting maternal diets to improve overall #swine health. 🐷 This important work is part of PIG-PARADIGM 's $21.2 million international project addressing antimicrobial resistance, with collaboration from leading researchers like UC Davis CLEAR Center's Director of Swine Research, Dr. Yanhong Liu, Dr. Peng Ji, and other faculty from the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Wageningen Livestock Research, Aarhus University, University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet), & Aalborg University.
