🌍🌿 Happy World Environment Day!  At LIFE NextFumigreen, we join this very special celebration highlighting our commitment to sustainability and the protection of biodiversity. Our project promotes the use of natural biopesticides that not only protect some greenhouse crops, but also take care of the ecosystem 🐝. 🌱 The collaboration with FUMI-HOGAR, B&B ASESORES, Centro Tecnológico Tecnova, Comercial Química Massó , BrioAgro España and the FINNOVA FOUNDATION (EU), allows us to move towards a safer and more sustainable agriculture. Together, we work to empower farmers and improve food security. 🌾 Organics Europe Youth Event 2024 🚜 👩🌾 From July 8 to 9, the second edition of the Organic Europe Youth Event (OEYE) will take place in Bari, Italy, hosted by CIHEAM Bari and organised by IFOAM Organics Europe. An inspiring event aiming to empower the future of the organic community by bringing together young individuals from different fields such as farmers, researchers, certifiers, and activists, all passionate about organic and sustainable agriculture. 🌱 Marco Paravicini, an Italian biodynamic farmer, Board member of Demeter Italia and vice-president of FederBio, presented the #biodynamic approach among the different #sustainable food systems with actors from the #organic, #regenerative, and #agroecological movement. An interesting start to the discussions of the OEYE followed by other important topics, such as the question of access to land and the development of local food policies. 🌍 The keynote speech, entitled ‘From Earth Democracy to Rights of Nature’, will be given by Dr. Vandana Shiva, a worldwide recognized environmental thinker, activist, feminist, philosopher of science, and science policy advocate. She will share her experience with ecological activism in the context of the organic movement. 🎉 Happy World Creativity and Innovation Day! 👩 🔬 Today, April 21st, LIFE NextFumigreen celebrates the importance of giving free rein to our imagination to provide solutions to the challenges faced by the primary sector such as sustainable agriculture, the circular economy and digitalization.  🍃 LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is a European project that seeks to develop natural smokers, from active ingredients extracted from plant extracts, for the control of populations of whiteflies and other pests in horticultural crops developed intensively under greenhouses. The goal is to test the efficacy of a new fumigant biopesticide that is less toxic than conventional ones. With a total budget of €2,758,921.01, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN will contribute to improving food security, biodiversity and the professionalization of farmers in the use of biopesticides.   🙌 This project, led by FUMI-HOGAR in collaboration with B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó , BrioAgro España and the Fundación FINNOVA (EU), is an inspiring example of how creativity and innovation can make a difference in sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Last week I attended the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity celebration event (thanks Sara Pais for the invitation). It was a privilege to listen to speakers such as Angela Merkel (president of the jury) and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (president of Portugal), but also exciting to see regenerative agriculture being at the core of the winners’ selection. Coincidentally (or not), the winning project of the Hult Prize Portugal 2024 (of which I was part of the jury) was also centred on sustainable agriculture. Many of the projects I was involved in for the last few years had a strong component of restoring ‘land-health’, posing important systemic questions: - How to create a climate smart forest economy that protects and supports nature and livelihoods? (with Marshall Clemens and Jess Hewitt from Nexial, and Robyn van den Heuvel and the CSFEP team) - How to best engage institutional stakeholders to drive equitable and sustainable agricultural development in Africa? (with Tess Russo from the Gates Foundation, Claire Vintiner from Fresh Futures, Titilope Fakoya and Soyome Alemayehu) - How to transform the fashion value chain in a way that regenerates the land where materials come from, involving local communities and creating a sense of identity between users and places of origin? (with Nick Keppel-Palmer and mandar jayawant from the Good Growth Company) - How to foster deep transitions from our current systems, with food systems being one of the pillars? (with Samantha Veide and the team at Forum for the Future). With the risk of stating the obvious, soil health is fundamental to producing good food, fibres, forests… and storing carbon. And we have all heard that monoculture and use of excessive chemicals are not good for the soil, in the same way that lack of variety in our diets and excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods are not good for us. So it’s encouraging to see these two prizes recognising projects that have been advancing regenerative agriculture, and working towards a healthier and more equitable tomorrow. #agriculture #regeneration #sustainability #systemchange

🌍 In the #InternationalDayAgainstClimateChange, we highlight how toxic-free agriculture is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The European project LIFE NextFumigreen develops natural fumigants from plant extracts, controlling pests and diseases in horticultural crops in a sustainable way. 🌱✨ The use of natural biopesticides, such as those proposed by LIFE NextFUMIGREEN, not only reduces dependence on chemicals that pollute soil and water, but also minimizes environmental impact. 💡 In addition, these agricultural practices contribute to the regeneration of biodiversity and the storage of carbon in healthier soils, a vital tool in the fight against climate change. 🤝 This project has the collaboration of FUMI-HOGAR, B&B ASESORES, Comercial Química Massó , BrioAgro España and the FINNOVA FOUNDATION.
