This just in! Formal negotiations have been launched on Japan’s association to #HorizonEurope. With this move, Japan joins the list of other like-minded non-EU countries with a strong science, innovation and technology profile – such as Canada, New Zealand or South Korea. This collaboration, in addition to the EU-Japan deal on data flows (July 2024) could be a game changer in ensuring competitiveness, in these times of volatile policy changes potentially shaking up the status quo, across the industry!  https://lnkd.in/e2D62K3W

🇪🇺European Union and 🇯🇵Japan reached a milestone in their cooperation as formal negotiations have been launched on Japan’s association to Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme.

Breaking news: The European Commission and the Government of Singapore launched exploratory discussions in view of #Singapore’s possible association to #HorizonEurope, the EU's key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. Association to the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation is the closest form of international cooperation in science and technology between the European Union and a non-EU country. Keeping China Dependent on Europe – Towards Technological Autonomy or Strategic Entanglement German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) 8 May 2024 #China #Europe #Technology In recent years, Europe has aimed to reduce its strategic technology dependency from China. In fact, the People‘s Republic has become an innovation powerhouse. However, to this day, China profits from interaction with Europe. In its new report, the Digital Power China research consortium traces whether and how China relies on Europe. Such reverse dependence poses a dilemma for Europe: Strategic entanglement preserves leverage but stands in the way of increased security through autonomy. We discuss these risks and the opportunities.

Strengthening China-LAC Ties: Opportunities for Chinese Companies through Media Cooperation The 2024 China-Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Media Cooperation Forum, held in Rio de Janeiro, brought together representatives from over 13 countries to explore mutual understanding and cooperation. For Chinese companies, these strengthened ties with LAC present promising opportunities for international expansion and partnerships. The emphasis on equality, mutual benefit, and innovation creates a favorable environment for Chinese firms to explore new markets in the region. By leveraging the Belt and Road Initiative and fostering people-to-people exchanges, Chinese businesses can deepen their engagement in LAC, tapping into sectors such as technology, infrastructure, and trade, which are positioned for growth under this cooperative framework. On 29 November 2024, the EU and Japan began formal negotiations to cooperate within Horizon Europe, the union’s research, and innovation programme. Horizon Europe is the EU’s ambition to expand cooperation with like-minded non-EU countries that have a strong science, innovation, and technology profile. If the negotiations are successful, Japanese researchers will be able to lead and coordinate their own research and innovation projects under the programme, seek deeper collaboration with partners in the EU and others, and secure funding. https://lnkd.in/ejH_jVVN.  

📈 China economic database - November update This edition builds on our previous coverage of Chinese #innovation. We graph the total number of patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (#PCT) illustrating how China has overtaken both the United States and Japan since before 2020. We also display fresh data from the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (#WIPO) Global Innovation Index, where China rose to the 11th place among the world’s top innovators, overtaking France.
