Exploring “Leaky Practices” at Dutch Design Week with ‘The Leaky Bodies Archives’ Yesterday at Dutch Design Week, our collective BLOB, in collaboration with the researchcentre WhatArtKnows, presented an artistic experiment titled ‘The Leaky Bodies Archives’. This project emerged from a desire to rethink how we perceive our bodies—not as isolated entities but as porous intersections between self and environment. In our society, there’s often an emphasis on maintaining boundaries: “know your limits” or “protect your space.” While boundaries are essential, we risk ignoring the subtle ways in which our bodies “leak” into their surroundings and vice versa. Through our project, we aimed to document these “leaky practices” and cultivate a deeper understanding and enhance articulation of how our bodies engage with the world around us. Visitors at our installations were invited to challenge their perceptions of physical boundaries. Interactive experiences like Leaky Savours explored the idea of taking in the external world through something as simple as drinking substances with known effects on the body—showing how everyday acts contribute to our constant exchange with our environment. This project has reminded us of the importance of embracing these subtleties and finding new, expansive ways to relate to ourselves and the world. In collaboration with WhatArtKnows, we’re continuing to explore and document these hidden interactions in an evolving archive. The Phillips Pavilion, constructed in 1958, stands as a monumental design by Xenakis, revealing a profound architectural connection in the formalization and restructuring of sonic material and the acoustic space it hosts. By integrating principles from architecture, visual art, and sound composition, the Phillips Pavilion offered a unique and innovative architecture for presenting the first examples of immersive and multidimensional auditory experiences. The sound composition on the video is generated by a single PolyNodes instance with a percussive sonic material as input. When planning amenities for a new space, architects and designers typically focus on functional offerings like accessibility, food options, or fitness facilities. The emerging field of neuroaesthetics is showing that we can take those amenities to a new level by incorporating the power of art. Neuroesthetics research demonstrates how art acts as an enhancing tool, improving the appeal and positive associations people feel toward the amenities with which it's integrated. An intentionally-curated art program can be the secret ingredient that connects people to a space and draws them to spend time there. Don't overlook the unifying, engagement-boosting potential of art when designing and building common spaces! It can be the special touch that transforms function into captivation. In a world where space for genuine self-expression is rapidly narrowing, Expressions of Resilience opened as a beacon of creativity, authenticity, and defiance in collaboration with BUILDHOLLYWOOD. This self-funded, grassroots exhibition reclaimed physical space for young creative talent—a place where artists, makers, and visionaries unapologetically expressed themselves. Here, creativity became a shared experience, an activation of space, and a vibrant pushback against limitation. Proudly presented by Beyond the Box CIC, with our dedication to connecting culture and community, Expressions of Resilience embodied our founding principle of "equity by design." Through this project, we empowered individuals to shape their surroundings, celebrating collective identity. We set to redefined how people connect with art, one another, and their community—providing a platform for underrepresented voices through community-driven initiatives and partnerships. At the heart of Expressions of Resilience was collaboration—true collaboration that valued each voice, medium, and story shared within the exhibition walls. From film and dance to visual art and soundscapes, each piece represented an emerging artist’s unique voice in an environment that encouraged experimentation, growth, and unfiltered expression. In partnership with the team at Recollective, Expressions of Resilience embraced a materials-first approach to design, placing sustainability at the forefront of the project with 90% of materials being sourced from reused and repurposed materials. Together, we redefined responsible creation, ensuring each element of the exhibition reflected respect for our planet and a vision for a sustainable future. As digital spaces expand, physical space for expression has become a precious commodity. This exhibition challenged that reality, creating a space free of gatekeepers, where no institution defined the boundaries of creative expression. This immersive setting did more than showcase talent—it invited viewers to become part of the story. Expressions of Resilience was a powerful reminder of the importance of physical spaces, where creation and connection come alive in real time. Together, we reclaimed the physical realm for creativity, ensuring that self-expression, collaboration, and resilience remain rooted in the heart of our communities.
