It's an exciting first day at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona #SCEWC24 —a gathering of visionary leaders, tech innovators, and forward-thinking investors! The discussions are laser-focused on one big question: How do we reshape cities to reduce car dependency? It's increasingly clear that investing in larger roads and new bridges may actually increase car reliance. The day’s highlight for me was a powerful session titled “An Awakening Call for Public Transport in Europe,” led by André Sobczak, Secretary General of Eurocities, with several deputy mayors of mobilities across Europe. The standout speaker in my opinion was Arianna Censi, Deputy Mayor for Mobility in the City of Milan, who delivered a bold vision of reimagining urban mobility. She emphasized that investments in mobility must prioritize the dignity of public transport—an essential for livable, accessible cities. she was honest about the challenges and she was clear about the roadmap Adding to the momentum, a landmark declaration was signed by 10 European cities, committing to accelerate the development of smart, accessible public transit solutions. It’s a game-changer for urban transformation. For us in the Middle East ( the auto-centric cities) , the conversation around public transport investment is one we need to prioritize. We must envision a future where public networks reach the closest points to our homes and work, making car-free mobility a realistic option. Today’s discussions on mobility hubs were also inspiring—many cities have seen great success integrating these hubs, and it’s time for us to explore how we can replicate that here. Urban planning that fosters inclusivity, smart technology, and a shift away from cars isn’t just visionary—it’s necessary. Looking forward to more insights this week! #SmartCityExpo #UrbanMobility #SustainableCities #PublicTransport #Barcelona

Smart Cities Expo 2023 The Smart Cities Expo 2023 in Barcelona (Spain) aimed to explore and showcase innovative solutions for urban development and sustainability. The event focused on promoting the integration of technology, data, and smart infrastructure to enhance urban living. Key objectives included fostering collaboration between government, industry, and academia, addressing urban challenges such as mobility, energy efficiency, and climate resilience, and exploring how smart city technologies can improve quality of life, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. The expo also provided a platform for sharing best practices and cutting-edge innovations in smart city development. Avia-GIS (Guy Hendrickx) was present at the expo with a booth showcasing how the combined use of VECMAP and VECTRACK can help monitor and therefore mitigate the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases in urban areas, with a specific reference of potentially increased risk in greener parts of the city.

So last week I was at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. Lots of brilliant tech projects and ideas. Not so many projects aimed more at, well, the people who live in these cities. I've seen solutions for infrastructure problems, integration of transportation systems, 3D modelling for flood prevention, autonomous and intermodal everything. Not so many proposals on how to fix loneliness, housing prices, exclusion, etc. One of the few times I heard about the role of psychologists was during a panel on cybercrime - after all, that's when misunderstanding human behaviour makes a company lose a lot of money. I get it. Human issues are messy, and not as measurable as creating an intelligent building that saves energy or building roads and trains and making them talk to each other. And funding goes to measurable and sexy projects. But since cities are, ultimately, a bunch of people living together, I would love to see more of the "human smartness" side of things. Projects asking: how people feel about their cities? How they can be happier, safer, and feel included? And obviously, would love to see more funding going to these questions. As a humanities person, I'm asking myself: "In this context, how can make messy sexy?" #SCEWC24
