🌍 COP29 in Baku: A Turning Point for Article 6 and Reforestation 🌱📊 At COP29, world leaders reached a landmark agreement on UN-backed carbon market mechanisms under Article 6. This breakthrough has the potential to transform global climate efforts, but its success depends on how it is implemented. Here is why this matters for reforestation: 🔹 Article 6 could drive impactful projects like Lignaverda’s initiatives in Senegal, which go beyond planting trees to restore ecosystems and empower communities. 🔹 Transparent standards and measurable outcomes are crucial to ensure carbon markets deliver real ecological and socio-economic benefits. 🔹 Strong safeguards are needed to prevent misuse, ensuring carbon markets accelerate—not delay—direct emissions reductions. At Lignaverda, we have spent 18 years building reforestation projects that are about people as much as they are about the planet. As part of the Great Green Wall, we integrate technology, training, and sustainable agricultural practices to create lasting impact. The stakes could not be higher. Let us ensure COP29 marks the beginning of a new era for reforestation and global climate action. 🌿 What is your perspective? 🌍 Every year, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP) gathers nations to debate global emissions. But for those most impacted by these decisions, voices are too often left out. This year’s COP29, from Nov 11-22, will be hosted by Azerbaijan—an oil-producing autocracy, where decisions that could shape our future will be made. ⛰️ Despite Azerbaijan’s stunning Caucasus mountain ranges and shrinking glaciers (retreating up to 18% in the past seven years, according to Azeri sources), oil exploitation continues. Even with government proposals for clean energy, the grip of fossil fuels remains tight. 🌱 Is COP becoming a stage for greenwashing by big corporations and authoritarian regimes? We need tough love for fossil fuel giants—stop exploration, halt new projects, and prioritize communities already facing sea-level rise, floods, and droughts. Anything less would be a COP-out. 📸Photo by Orkhan Farmanli / Unsplash #Glacierwatch #COP29 #Baku #Azerbaijan #ClimateCrisis #Glaciers #Caucasus

🌍 Controversy at UN COP29 🌍 As COP29 Azerbaijan unfolds, key discussions have centered around stronger commitments to renewable energy, accelerating net-zero targets, and integrating climate resilience into urban planning. There's been a particular focus on tightening #ESG regulations and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals #UNSDGs However, it's clear that the path forward isn't without challenges. Key experts, including a former United Nations Secretary General and former United Nations Climate Chief, have highlighted that the current structure of the COP climate talks is "no longer fit for purpose" and urgently needs an overhaul. This underscores the necessity for more effective, streamlined local action to meet the demands of our rapidly changing climate landscape. This is not the first time that COP meetings have been criticised as greenwashing conferences. Alarmingly, humanity is breeching the 1.5C greenhouse gas emission limit with no sign of slowing down. Heat records have been shattered, with this year likely to be the hottest ever recorded and very close to home we have seen the devastation caused by extreme floods in Malaga, Spain. At energylab_ we recognise the importance of innovating and replicating locally, within our sphere of influence and control. Our work aligns with the evolving ESG landscape, supporting clients in achieving sustainable, low-carbon buildings that prioritise environmental and social impacts. We want to work with others whose vision for a fair and sustainable life for all aligns with ours in order to maximise our impact and reach.🌿 Whether you're following COP29 or want to chat about sustainable building solutions more generally, please do reach out so we can connect and explore how we can collaborate as a force for good. #COP29 #BuildingSustainability #NetZero #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/e7JniaP3

#COP29 concluded in Baku this weekend with a deal. What happened and what needs to happen next? 👉 The main objective of COP29 was to deliver a new finance goal to support developing countries to reduce their emissions and adapt to the climate crisis, and to pave the way to countries’ new climate pledges expected next year. 👉 It did (eventually) close with a deal on the New Collective Quantified Goal, but this figure remains insufficient to meet the needs of those countries most vulnerable to climate change. 👉 Last year, we celebrated the historic pledge from countries at COP28 to ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels. But this time, the plan to turn this ambition into action was pushed back to next year’s summit in Brazil. 👉 Despite the frustrations shared at the end of the COP on these two critical priorities, COP29 saw some progress. After nearly a decade of negotiations, COP29 reached agreement on carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Mexico, Latin America’s second-largest emitter, announced it will set a target to reach net zero by 2050. 25 countries and the EU announced plans to include a pledge for ‘no new unabated coal power’ in their next climate plans (NDCs). More than 30 countries representing nearly 50% of global methane emissions signed up to a new declaration to set targets in future NDCs on reducing methane from organic waste. Once again in 2024 - in the surfacing of environmental data, so important to help the world's economy towards nature-positive decisions: • Two-thirds of global market capitalization disclosed through CDP. • Close to 25k companies reported this year - and almost two-thirds of disclosed extended beyond climate data into nature-related information, an increase of 21% year-on-year • Over half of the reporters used CDP’s new SME questionnaire Thank you to all disclosers who worked so hard this year. You wrote that data once - and it will be used many times for critical insights and decisions.

With improved NDCs at the heart of discussions here in Baku, today's news is a welcome shot in the arm for ambitious, trackable plans that drive a new approach to climate action. In 2024, over 24,800 companies disclosed through CDP, representing two-thirds of global market capitalization. Over 3,500 companies reported across climate, deforestation, and water security. This progress isn’t just about more data—it’s about the right data to drive real action. Companies disclosing at the request of investors reduce emissions by 7-10% within two years, showing the power of disclosing through CDP. As the dust settles after #COP28, varying perspectives have emerged on the effectiveness of the agreement, which recognizes the need for “deep, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions” to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Critics argue that its non-binding nature and concessions made for consensus don't aim high enough. Yet, the commitments secured provide investors, regulators, and stakeholders with necessary reference points for addressing key climate-related issues moving forward. Ultimately, the topics covered during #COP28UAE impact all companies — further reinforcing the need for boards and management to be diligent about managing climate-related risks and proactively communicating how such risks are incorporated into long-term strategy.
