We are so grateful to work with a diverse team of caring professionals! Rehabilitation Awareness Week is a time to acknowledge all rehabilitation professionals for their work, as it requires equal parts dedicated knowledge of the human body in partnership with patience and understanding. Fact: The Physical Therapy profession began in World War I to take care of injured soldiers. At the time, it was a female-only profession with 274 members of the American Women’s Physical Therapy Association. Graduates of physical therapy schools were rare. Most schools did not offer coursework in the profession until the 1960s-1970s. How can you observe Rehabilitation Awareness Week? 50% of people typically utilize PT, OT, or other forms of rehabilitation every year. Invite a professional to speak at your office, workplace, or school! #rehabilitationawarenessweek #rehabilitation #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist #caringprofessionals #rehabilitationspecialist #healthcarethatcares #teamwork #livepainfree #healthcarehistory #historyinmedicine #themoreyouknow

I met with a frustrated Physical Therapist this week for coffee. She told me she at their clinic they see each other's patients. There is not one consistent way in which the physical therapists write goals for the patients. She was frustrated because it wasn't clear what the goal was working with the patient. Here are some examples she gave me of how a bad and a good goal make a difference for her patients: Poorly Written Goal: Client is able to walk Smart Goal: The patient will walk unassisted for 200 feet without pain within 8 weeks, by increasing walking distance by 20 feet each week through guided therapy and home exercises. Once the clearly defined outcome is defined, the next step is breaking down a roadmap to get there. This detailed work on the front end provides clarity for whoever is working with the patient, but also for the patient. Good news! This physical therapist is working with the team to get everyone one the same page to better serve their clients!
