Prof. Dr. Marianna Tryfonidou builds bridge between veterinary and human medicine using stem cells! 🐕🧬 More info below👇 Meet Prof. Dr. Marianna Tryfonidou, head of the Regenerative Orthopedics group with a background in veterinary medicine. She is concerned with the 'One Health - One Medicine' principle in which solutions to medical problems in the animal world inspire solutions in human medicine. Currently, she is researching biomaterials and advanced stem cell therapy for treatment of osteoarthritis and back pain caused by degeneration of the intervertebral disc. These topics will be highlighted in her lecture during the SUMMA Symposium. #summasymposium #stemcells #medicine #science

📢 New Publication in Frontiers in Veterinary Science! 🦉📝 We are excited to announce the publication of our article titled: "Case report: Evaluation of head trauma in a tawny owl (Strix aluco) with advanced imaging diagnostic, FVEP and BAER test" The case report details a tawny owl admitted to the veterinary hospital at the University of Parma following head trauma. Using advanced diagnostic approaches, including computed tomography (CT), flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP), and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER), we assessed the extent of neurological damage and better understood the trauma's repercussions. 🔬 **Ultrasonography: A Game Changer in Diagnosing Equine Colic** 🐎 Here are some key conditions where ultrasonography plays a vital role: 1. **Nephrosplenic Ligament Entrapment**: By visualizing the displacement of the spleen and colon, ultrasonography helps us confirm if the colon is trapped in the nephrosplenic space. Treatment can be as simple as administering phenylephrine and lunging the horse, or, in more severe cases, surgical correction. 2. **Sand Colic**: The accumulation of sand in the intestines can be visualized as small, pinpoint hyperechoic echoes that weigh down the bowel and limit peristalsis. Early detection through ultrasound can prevent the condition from worsening and causing serious complications. 3. **Intussusception**: This life-threatening condition, where one segment of the intestine telescopes into another, can be diagnosed via the characteristic "bull’s-eye" appearance on ultrasound. Early diagnosis is critical for surgical intervention and a successful outcome. 4. **Strangulating Small Intestinal Lesions**: Distended, fluid-filled intestines with thickened, edematous walls and decreased peristaltic activity can be detected ultrasonographically, helping us confirm strangulation and the need for immediate surgery. 5. **Impaction Colic**: By detecting large, echogenic masses within the intestines, ultrasonography helps us diagnose and monitor impactions, which can often be treated medically before they escalate into surgical cases. 6. **Right Dorsal Colitis**: Thickening of the right dorsal colon caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicity can be easily detected through ultrasound. Early detection allows for timely intervention and potentially life-saving treatment. It’s amazing to see how technology like ultrasonography continues to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis and improve outcomes for our equine patients. By leveraging these tools, we can make more informed decisions and ensure that every horse receives the best care possible. 🏥 #EquineVeterinary #Colic #Ultrasonography #VeterinaryMedicine #EquineCare #VeterinaryInnovation #EquineSurgery
