There are so many reasons why an autistic person might not be identified or diagnosed until after childhood or well into adulthood. Some examples include: • Changing diagnostic criteria • Stigma and ableism • Cultural, age, and gender bias Our understanding of autism is now broader and deeper than in the past. As we learn more, many autistic adults are recognizing their own autistic traits for what they are. An autism diagnosis can allow an autistic person to better understand their strengths, help them identify needs and ask for accommodations, give them a community to connect to, and provide self-understanding. An autism diagnosis, or any neurodivergent diagnosis, does not automatically imply a lack of ability. The success of an autistic person is influenced by their access to skill-building opportunities. With the support of a caring adult, books, and other educational tools, a child with autism can be equipped to lead a fulfilling life as an adult. It is crucial to shift the narrative surrounding autism and other forms of neurodivergence from one focused on struggle to one highlighting fulfillment. #educationalleadership #neurodiversityaffirming #transformationalleadership #educationforall
