Peel’s launch announcement on LinkedIn went really well. Deceptively well. Why deceptively? Positive moments like a well-received launch make it easy to forget how hard startups are. Yesterday afternoon, someone sent me this Carta data on where the 2019 cohort of startups is today. It was a sobering reminder of how tough startups can be: Out of 4,379 companies: - 54% are going-concerns - 42% are closed - 4% have been acquired - 0.2% have done an IPO (none if you take out biotech) Most of the companies that are going-concerns are still in the seed/Series A range. So it’s tough and it takes time. But this isn’t meant to be a negative, woe-is-me post. For me, this data just reinforces the need to celebrate the positive moments - like launches - that we get to experience on the startup journey. So here’s to launching companies! 🚀 The 2024 Startup Muster Report is out, providing an insightful snapshot into the lives of Aussie founders and the broader startup ecosystem. We're thrilled to see our portfolio members Olympia Yarger of GOTERRA and Camille Goldstone-Henry of Xylo Systems gain well-deserved recognition for their exceptional contributions.    Challenges: Founders face ongoing and new challenges like customer acquisition, marketing, and understanding VC expectations amid tough economic conditions. Many are gearing up to hire for these roles soon. Funding remains tough with high interest rates and low VC investment, while R&D tax incentives and grants are crucial but complicated.     Good news: Deep tech is on the rise, with 22% of respondents identifying as such.
