And just as importantly, network, get to know everyone on your team, build relationships and team up with people who will help you to get quick wins and help you learn the job, culture, purpose, and the company in greater depth.

My days of working under an employer are behind me, but I’ve always encouraged my social work colleagues and students to ask thoughtful, probing questions. In our field, especially, it’s crucial to dig deeper and challenge assumptions in order to grow both personally and professionally. I always remind my clients and students that staying silent to “figure it out” on your own is not the most effective approach anymore. Asking smart questions opens up opportunities for clarity, growth, and connection. LinkedIn

Michelle Lim offers valuable advice on using questions strategically in the workplace: 1. Ask investigative questions to uncover deeper insights 2. Use speculative questions to challenge assumptions and explore new possibilities 3. Ask purpose-aligning questions to consider the broader implications of decisions This approach promotes critical thinking, innovation, and strategic alignment. Many professionals hesitate to ask questions due to fear of appearing unknowledgeable or challenging authority. However, thoughtful questioning demonstrates engagement, curiosity, and a desire to contribute meaningfully. By reframing questions as tools for growth and improvement rather than admissions of ignorance, we can create more dynamic, collaborative work environments where ideas and solutions flourish.
