Humans at the heart of AI: An interview with Brenda Bown

In a world where artificial intelligence is transforming how we work, Brenda Bown, CMO of AI at SAP, shares why she believes humans remain essential to its success. She reveals how she empowers her team to embrace AI in their daily work and offers insights into how people and technology can collaborate to drive innovation.

Why do humans play such an important role in unlocking AI’s full potential?

AI isn’t here to replace us—it’s here to empower us. Many fear AI might replace jobs or diminish human value, but AI works best when side by side with humans, amplifying our creativity and problem-solving abilities.

By harnessing AI’s power, we can enhance our work and create new opportunities for growth and innovation. However, to achieve this, we need the right education and tools to collaborate effectively with AI. The future of work is human + AI, starting with learning how to work with it, not against it.

How can companies encourage their teams to embrace AI in the workplace?

Encouraging AI adoption isn't just about directing employees to use it—it's about giving them the space to experiment, make mistakes, and learn. Leaders and companies need to foster a culture where employees feel empowered to work with AI, even when outcomes aren’t perfect. Sometimes AI will deliver exactly what we expect, and other times it’ll require adjustments. But that's where growth happens—through continuous learning and refinement.

When employees have the freedom to test, tweak, and perfect AI outputs, they build confidence in using this powerful tool to enhance their work.

Why is it crucial for businesses to invest in AI and training today?

In today’s fast-evolving world, having a unique competitive advantage is more important than ever. AI offers businesses the chance to differentiate in ways once unimaginable. Its adaptability and versatility allow companies of all sizes to stay ahead of the curve. To truly harness its potential, continuous education and training for teams are essential.

AI works best when integrated alongside human ingenuity. By equipping employees with the skills to collaborate with AI, companies remain competitive and thrive in an AI-driven world. When I read The Brave New World by Adlas Huxley for the first time , I wasn't surprised as a normal reader rather thought about my personal imagined world through literature and Mathematical sense ! When was the first time I listened about AI and its working method of self learning then the first thing which came to mind was Brave New World and 1984 ! The disadvantages of AI are just negligible and the future of mankind is surely an AI based society where we , as the human, will not suffer at least to remember so much unnecessary information which use the significant part of our brain and this free space of the brain can be used for creative and scientific works and the world will become much better for humanity ।
