Yesterday's UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) session on Systems Change for a More Sustainable Built Environment was great! It wrapped up a six-month journey involving industry partners in several fractal groups to discuss opportunities for Systems Change, addressing the purpose of the built environment, materiality, economy, power relations and leadership, etc. As an Observation Group Member, I see the strengths of these sessions, beautifully moderated by Russell Saunders and the team, in their ability to get participants to understand the different angles and viewpoints and interdisciplinarity of the built environment. They showed the interrelation of the different system(s) parts and high complexity but, at the same time, the power that each of us has in the process of change. Clearly, the more we talk together, the fewer discrepancies will exist in the different systems' response times, facilitating change. The role of communities, social factors and behaviour, and places' narratives also appear as critical parameters. It is also clear to me that passionate and compassionate leadership styles are essential in the complex process of change and adaptation and can be effective catalysts for system adaptations to sustainable futures. It is exciting to see how the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) will take this great initiative further! Thank you so much, UKGBC Team and participants! I am proud to have played a role in developing the #NewEuropeanBauhaus (#NEB) Guide alongside distinguished colleagues and under the JRC leadership. This guide includes a Handbook and a self-assessment tool aimed at advancing the NEB’s three core dimensions—sustainability, beauty, and inclusiveness—in the built environment across Europe and beyond. My contribution focused on the Sustainability dimension, particularly within the Economy area.
