Today, 21 September, is International Peace Day. Let's return to basics. What is peace? Is it the absence of war? Or the absence of conflict? Or is there peace only when there is silence or quietness as that which reigns in the grave? Conflict is a fact of life. It will always exist. The difference is our ability to deal with it and its outcome, whether positive or negative. Peace is the nonviolent resolution of conflict. It is the constant nonviolent resolution, management, and/or transformation of conflicts, disputes, or misunderstandings while maintaining mutual respect for cultures, values, and principles. Therefore, as we commemorate this International Peace Day, let's strive to reflect and answer the question of how much are we investing in developing our individual capacities, others and those of our institutions. Investing in conflict resolution skills is a proactive approach to better understand the interests, positions of parties to a conflict or dispute before embarking on constantly resolve issues, differences, disputes, misunderstandings without resorting to applying violence or violent approaches. Recently, in a debate we held on the subject of war, it became clear that while views may differ, peace is at the heart of what most people truly seek. However, achieving peace is not a simple task—it depends on many factors, both global and personal. The Complexity of War and Peace War is often born out of deeper issues like political conflicts, territorial disputes, or economic pressures. These external factors can feel overwhelming, as they are largely beyond the control of individuals. But our debate underscored an important point: while global leaders, nations, and politics influence the grand scale of peace, each of us plays a crucial role in creating peace in our own environments. Peace Begins at Home The search for peace does not solely belong to politicians or diplomats. It starts in our daily lives, within our homes, families, and communities. How we interact with others, how we resolve conflict, how we nurture kindness and understanding—these are the building blocks of a peaceful world. Every peaceful act at home reflects a larger vision of peace on the global stage.
