A startling 57 percent of people in the LGBTQ+ community have reported that they or an LGBTQ+ loved one has been threatened or have experienced harassment and a trailing 51 percent have experienced violence due to their sexual or gender identity. While sheer statistics cannot encapsulate the social pressures that the LGBTQ+ community experiences, they certainly do speak to the multiple variables that can exacerbate emotional distress for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. To combat this issue, the first step is awareness. It is more important than ever to check in with friends and let them know that you are there for them. Election cycles are extra challenging for the LGBTQIA2S+ community, the toxic energy that politicians put out is harmful, so let's check in with each other and tell them that we care about them. Be willing to listen and let your friends share openly without judgment. It is ok to be vulnerable. #LGBTQIA2SPlusPeopleMater #DiversityInclusionBelonging #InclusiveEducation #SupportQueers #worldsuicideprevention

On this Day of Silence, we join the LGBTQ+ community and allies in honoring the silence that speaks volumes about the struggles, discrimination, and bullying faced by LGBTQ+ youth, especially in schools. We recognize the challenges that LGBTQ+ youth encounter daily. Many of them are at a higher risk of homelessness due to rejection, discrimination, or abuse from their families and communities. No one should ever face the harsh realities of homelessness simply for being their authentic selves. We provide shelter options and mental health resources to help provide a safe space. Our goal is to break down the barriers that lead to homelessness within the LGBTQ+ community. As we observe the Day of Silence, let us remember that silence can be a powerful catalyst for change. Let's break the silence on homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth and work towards a city where everyone has a safe place to call home.
