What a sticky situation Tate & Lyle got into with the Lyle's Golden Syrup rebrand! As with any branding change, opinions come very quickly, personally, I understand both sides of the company and the controversy. Sadly, losing the world's oldest unchanged packaging (Guinness World Record!) even if it sticks around for the tin version, is a nostalgic loss. Generations we have never met have known that iconic green and gold tin we see in stores today. On the other side, brands need to evolve to meet modern consumers, even over 100 years later. The classic tin is still here, while the newer squeezy bottle gets the refresh. I can picture kids drizzling it on pancakes like no tomorrow with the updated design, while grandparents stick to the original tin. Two designs aren't always the greatest, but for those who despise the new design that much get to choose which one to go for. Whatever your opinion, keep in mind human beings made the choice. While the charm may be different, the new packaging is still familiar and could reach new consumers for years to come. Sharing more branding work we created for one of my absolute favorite projects, PlantBite Bar & Grill! 🌱🍔 PlantBite is an ATL-based vegan burger joint serving up plant-based goodness without sacrificing any flavor. This color palette? It’s all about capturing the fresh, vibrant energy behind the brand! 🌿 Here’s why we chose these colors: - Black: A grounding, bold color representing strength and sophistication. - Blue: Refreshing and cool, highlighting the creativity and innovation that PlantBite brings to the table. - Green: A zesty green that screams plant-based vitality and sustainability. - White: Clean, pure, and simple—just like PlantBite’s mission to serve transparent, feel-good food. After years of working in the spirits packaging industry, I know that packaging design is one of the most potent tools for connecting with consumers. And with 72% of consumers agreeing that packaging design can influence their purchasing decisions (according to a study by IPSOS), it's clear that getting it right is essential. The Spearhead Global team has had the privilege of working with some incredible brands over the years. In that time, I’ve learned that the most successful packaging designs tell a powerful story. Take Corvus Vodka, for example. Ty Law had a clear vision for his brand: The raven, derived from the Latin word "Corvus," symbolizes intelligence, guidance, and protection – values at the brand's core. We worked closely with Ty to bring that vision to life, going through multiple rounds of renders and tweaks to ensure that every detail was just right. We made 3D prints in-house and prototyped the raven in different materials until we landed on the perfect pewter finish that conveyed the brand's modernity, sophistication, and elegance. On the other end of the spectrum, you have a brand like Rabbit Hole, whose packaging must reflect the rich culture and tradition of whiskey-making. Rabbit Hole is known for using unique grains and innovative finishing techniques to create highly acclaimed whiskeys that have won numerous awards. So, how do you communicate this in a luxury box?  We carefully selected materials and focused on component construction, even hand-inspecting each box to ensure the wood grain aligned perfectly. The result was a stunning packaging experience that conveyed the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into every bottle of Rabbit Hole whiskey. These incredible brands understand that packaging design should tell a story, convey your values, and create an emotional connection with consumers. So, if you’re working on your physical branding, I encourage you to think deeply about the story you want to tell through your packaging. Mountain Dew’s new look really stands out. PepsiCo brought back “Mountain Dew” in full, not just to remind us of the past but to connect with both loyal fans and a younger crowd. They’re blending the old with the new, and it’s smart. The new logo feels brighter, bolder. The yellow-green mix practically shouts “citrus,” and it’s designed to look great on both screens and cans. This colour choice keeps the brand fresh and eye-catching, whether you see it online or in a store. And the font, it's softer now. The sharp edges from 2009 are gone, replaced by smoother lines that feel friendly and approachable. Little details, like the joined “t” and “a” and the leaf over the “i,” connect back to older versions, giving a nod to Mountain Dew’s history. It’s a design that fits in anywhere. It’s bold enough for social media but also has a natural feel, appealing to people who love adventure and the outdoors. In the end, this update respects Mountain Dew’s roots but makes it feel new. At Joe Smith, design always flows from strategy. Whether the ask is for a new tradeshow brochure or wine labels, we always begin with the question "Who is this #brand? For Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyard, personality was something they already had in abundance (no really—upon entering, you'll be greeted by a taxidermy seal suspended by pink balloons...) So retro, so nostalgic - Tropicana re-branded, again! 15 years after one of the most tragic re-brands of all time, they're back in our supermarkets with a sparkling new look! The iconic OJ brand is back on our shelves, this time with a retro, nostalgic look that reminds us of our childhood. With a bright juicy orange and a red and white striped straw, plus the word 'original' added to their logo, it's giving off 90's breakfast vibes to us. This re-brand, or re-touch, took note from their previous re-brand which was a huge fail, and kept in line with the branding that fans and consumers are so accustomed to - namely the orange itself.
