Reflecting on some of the most insightful remarks made from our distinguished speakers, during 2024 annual meeting in #Davos, Irina Gorbounova, Head Xcarb Fund, ArcelorMittal highlighted the importance of decarbonization along with the role and challenges of utilizing green #hydrogen in this process: “We need a lot of #renewableenergy, but hydrogen for us is to use iron ore and instead of coking coal, or instead of natural gas, use hydrogen in order to get the carbon footprint of steel-making to the absolute minimum. Looking at the technologies, there is DRI, Directly Reduced Iron based on green hydrogen and is one of the pathways. One could use existing facilities and try to blend green hydrogen with natural gas, with the eventual idea to phase it out and switch to complete green hydrogen. The transition needs to be sustainable through concrete evolutionary steps”. The ABB team had a fantastic time at #TheElectricMine Conference 2024 last week, making valuable connections with partners and customers and presenting the successful pilot of the first ever full retrofit conversion of a diesel-powered dump truck to fully electric with Nuh Çimento Grubu. We want to thank everyone we spoke to for sharing their key challenges, giving insight on the new developments they are managing, and for highlighting what they are looking for from tech partners such as ABB. Understanding the needs of the whole industry, from OEMs to mine operators, is essential as we all work together to the same goal. It's clear that the common thread is a desire for a successful energy transition, and the need for clear guidance and expert collaboration to find sustainable solutions to individual challenges, and those of the industry at large. A couple of months ago, I wrote an article for Petrolplaza which spoke about naturally occurring hydrogen. Since then, discoveries have been made all around the world. Here are some facts about what is going on with White Hydrogen: - Initially thought to be a small amount, now according to the U.S. Geological Survey, around the world, about 100,000 megatonnes of hydrogen is accessible, which would represent hundreds of years of supply. - Test extractions in five locations have calculated the cost to extract at less than $0.40/kg. - Quality at top level is approximately 87%, reaching 98% at peak. - Hydrogen deposits are not as deep as first thought, and on top of that, recent taps have revealed helium abundance too, which means we are solving another global problem. - The deposits appear to be self-replenishing. - BMW's CEO has announced a recent shift in focus towards hydrogen for passenger vehicles. Watch this space. In two months, the world is rushing to find hydrogen, and they are succeeding. From engines running on ammonia, to membranes requiring 10x less rare earth metals and industrializing the production of electrolysers, the Hydrogen + Fuel Cells EUROPE has left me filled with optimism and excited for what the hydrogen industry will bring. Last week I had the honour to moderate at Europe's leading hydrogen industry trade fair in Hannover. This gave me the chance to interview industry leaders about what they're doing to boost the H2 economy. Allow me to share some of the interviews that I will not forget. In my interview with Brian young from the Washington state department of commerce, we spoke about the Hydrogen hubs that are being realized in America. It's inspiring to see the determination with which the US government is supporting H2. My key takeaway: if you're not in a hub yet, do not worry, there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved! Professor Hinrich Mohr told me about the ammonia internal combustion engine they're developing. Cleverly using a cracker to produce hydrogen to be used as a pilot fuel this project represents a key step towards decarbonization of the maritime sector. The first pilot ships is planned to sail early next year. Robert Atkinson walked me through the Blockchain based product passport, "SiGreen", Siemens is able to supply with their products. This passport tracks the environmental impact throughout the supply chain. Even though the emissions related to the production of electrolysers and other equipment are dwarfed by the operational emissions of grey hydrogen production which they help to replace, the need to track them is there, especially in the long term. This highlights are only the tip of the iceberg of innovation present in Hannover.
