"And herein lies the problem — we’ve convinced many of the younger staff to come to the office, but when they arrive, the water cooler is empty. Middle and upper management have the responsibility to refill the water cooler, and they aren’t doing it because they are well hydrated,” Jahn Brodwin said. “The back-to-office message needs to be heard by middle and upper management.” This is one of the most important considerations for #RTO. If your organization is starting to plan for #ReturnToOffice make sure you understand your #EX and #EVP well enough to create compelling messaging. You #internalcomms can do a lot of heavy lifting for you, but it needs to be spot on. Thank you for an excellent article Washington Business Journal and Andy Medici!

While there are countless factors which contribute to productivity in the office, none is more discussed than focus efficiency in an open plan environment. When we look across the globe, we find a wide discrepancy in how knowledge workers describe their own focus performance in an open plan. The United States is expectedly on the lower end of this list, but there are some countries/cultures where the open plan gets less grief. Guess which knowledge worker population responds the best to focusing in the open plan, and who responds the worst? As much as I wholeheartedly believe in the irreplaceable value of in-person collaboration, I believe modern employers must strike a reasonable balance between in-office mandates and remote work. Allowing some degree of hybrid working arrangements contributes significantly to employee satisfaction, reduces the need for commuting which lowers a company's overall carbon emissions, and boosts employee productivity. In my opinion, holding strictly "remote" or "in-office" positions is extreme on both sides of the employee/employer equation.
