🌍 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐇𝐆 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 On January 9, 2025, 47 governments, with the backing of the shipping industry, proposed a groundbreaking text to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a GHG emissions pricing mechanism in international shipping. This proposal aims to set a price per tonne of CO2e emitted, contributing to the IMO GHG Strategy Implementation Fund. The goal is to achieve 𝐧𝐞𝐭-𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟓𝟎, incentivizing the use of zero/near-zero emission fuels like green methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen. While the IMO's proposed mechanism is still under negotiation, it’s expected to be approved in April 2025 and could come into effect by 2027. The pricing per tonne of CO2e emitted is expected to range from 𝐔𝐒𝐃 𝟔𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐒𝐃 𝟑𝟎𝟎, depending on factors such as the reward rate for ZNZ fuel usage and the level of funding for developing countries. 🚢 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞? While the IMO works towards pricing GHG emissions, the EU has already begun its emissions pricing in 2024, setting a clear example of how action can be taken today to address climate change. As we move toward 2050, the shipping industry’s role in reducing global emissions is more important than ever. The IMO’s approach, with support from a broad coalition of nations, could be a game-changer in achieving a sustainable future for international shipping. 🌱 International Chamber of Shipping 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eb5wbKcq #Shipping #Sustainability #GHGEmissions #IMO #GreenShipping #CleanEnergy #NetZero #EU #ClimateAction #MaritimeIndustry #Innovation

"We need to act. We can do it, and we have to do it." Some compelling insights on decarbonisation from Dr Thomas Beard, our Clean Shipping lead, in this article from Mersey Maritime. Thomas argues that economic drivers are as essential as technical solutions for a successful maritime energy transition. He emphasises that high costs of alternative fuels and port infrastructure investment require strategic government support, with taxation and subsidies as essential levers. He urges immediate action in decarbonisation, noting that today’s reductions in emissions are increasingly valuable as the maritime industry confronts climate change. Enjoy reading the article, and contact Thomas if you would like to discuss this issue in more depth. https://bit.ly/3CvSY28 #CleanShipping #MerseyMaritime #Decarbonisation

ALTERNATIVE FUELS: International Chamber of Shipping and 47 governments propose GHG emissions pricing mechanism The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and 47 governments have made a joint submission to the final round of negotiations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG), recommending the adoption of a maritime #greenhousegas (GHG) #emissions pricing mechanism for international shipping. The joint submission by governments sets out convergent regulatory text for amendments to the IMO #MARPOL Convention, which will require companies operating ships on international voyages to make #GHG contributions per ton of #CO2e emitted to a new IMO GHG Strategy Implementation Fund. We need help to change! 🩵💚 Global shipping cannot successfully transition without widespread alternatives to ship bunker fossil fuels - and it’s imperative that the International Maritime Organization and its member states agree on making green maritime fuels as affordable as fossil fuels. As our #Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc says, we believe achieving this requires bold steps: implementing a global maritime fuel standard and a pricing mechanism that ensures price parity, levels the playing field, and supports large-scale green fuel projects. Shipping lines, through the World Shipping Council, have proposed a Green Balance Mechanism (GBM), which we support. Based on the life cycle analysis of the fuel, it proportionally rewards the use of green fuels and disincentivizes fossil fuels, closing the price gap from the outset without causing major inflationary disruptions. Additionally, the GBM establishes a fund to support a just transition, particularly benefiting developing nations by facilitating their energy transition without disproportionate burdens. This approach fosters a global leap towards sustainable maritime energy use. Governments at the IMO have only 6 months to a reach consensus on effective measures that will make green energy projects bankable in the short term, and we urge them to make tangible progress at MEPC82 meeting. By doing so, they will enable cargo owners to reduce scope 3 emissions on time and move the sector forward. It is crucial that these measures will be finally adopted in 2025. #Maersk #greenbalancemechanism #allthewaytozero #energytransition #giveusachancetochange

It's important to bring parity in every sphere of this industrial revolution and create a level playing field. Low emission Shipping is another revolution where we need the toughest regulations to build the resilience for this hard to abate sector by making green maritime fuels as cheap as fossil. If not now then never... #shipping #maersk #allthewaytozero #greenbalancemechanism #giveusachancetochange #imo

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and 47 governments have jointly proposed a groundbreaking initiative to combat climate change within the maritime sector. This proposal advocates for a global pricing mechanism for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping, aiming to incentivize the industry's transition towards a net-zero future by 2050. The revenue generated from this emissions pricing mechanism would be channeled into the IMO GHG Strategy Implementation Fund, a dedicated financial pool designed to support research and development of zero-emission technologies and fuels, as well as capacity building initiatives in developing countries. This joint proposal represents a significant step forward in the international community's efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry. By establishing a global market-based mechanism, the proposal aims to level the playing field for shipping companies worldwide, ensuring a fair and equitable transition towards a sustainable future. The proposed fund would play a crucial role in accelerating the development and deployment of innovative technologies, such as zero-emission fuels like green hydrogen and ammonia, and enabling the widespread adoption of energy-efficient vessels and operational practices. The success of this initiative hinges on the active participation and collaboration of all stakeholders, including governments, the shipping industry, and civil society. The proposal underscores the urgent need for a collective global effort to address the environmental challenges posed by international shipping and pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient maritime sector.
