Join us on November 18 for a discussion with Matthew E. Draper, Brooke Skartvedt Guven, Daniel Greineder and José Antonio Vázquez Cobo as we explore these and other questions. Would you like another reason to visit the beautiful city of #Istanbul? 🕰 Next week, Istanbul Arbitration Week 2024 will take place. Please join my co-panellists - Pascale Dahrouj, MPS, CACM, MCIArb, Dr. Fatih Aydoğan, Mustafa Serdar Bosca - and I on 3 October as we place Environmental, Social and Governance (#ESG) under a spotlight. The moderator will be the brilliant Nihal Mashaki. Lithium mining. Fossil fuel extraction. Hydro-power plants. They are all in the dock. It is estimated that buildings and infrastructure are responsible for 40% of annual global carbon emissions. Building materials and concrete bear significant responsibility too. Carbon-intensive companies with fossil fuel assets may be the problem. They are also part of the solution owing to their decarbonisation efforts. Some of them are large diversified companies implementing emission-reducing practices while also developing renewable energy assets. Across all stages of a project’s life cycle, mitigation measures can be deployed. Bidding. Procurement. Construction. O&M. Decommissioning. 1️⃣ Should contracts build-in ESG KPIs? 📏 2️⃣ Should measures penalising shortfall have the force of law? 👩⚖️ In many economies, a trinity of factors – the urgency of combating climate change through energy transition, continued reliance on hydrocarbons, and pursuing economic development/ employment generation – has increased tension amongst governments, “regulators” and investors. To know more from my esteemed panellists, join us at #ISTAW2024. Thank you to the organisers for the kind invitation. 🍀 Promoting sustainability through arbitration? 🍀 Castrén & Snellman and Delos Dispute Resolution are hosting a joint breakfast seminar to discuss the ways in which arbitration can promote sustainability and tackle climate change. The risk of ESG disputes is now a part of corporate reality, regardless of a company's line of business. Arbitration can play an important role in resolving such disputes internationally. The arbitration community is also becoming increasingly aware of the carbon footprint of arbitration proceedings, and several tools have been developed to make arbitration a greener practice. We warmly welcome corporate legal counsel and other corporate personnel involved in arbitration or ESG matters to join us in discussing these topical issues by registering at events@castren.fi.
