The Power of Lived Experience in DEI Training Occasionally, someone asks for ideas on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within their organisation, particularly those just starting to dig deeper into the topic. One of the first recommendations that tumbles out of my mouth is to establish a Diversity Speaker Series. It's a practical, easy-to-organise, cost-effective, and enjoyable way to capture everyone's attention. But here is the real gem. These speakers create a safe space for attendees to ask questions they might hesitate to pose elsewhere. This open dialogue empowers individuals to better understand DEI issues and become more confident in their interactions. An upcoming speaker, Julie Woods, has said no question is off the table—look out, Julie! We have approached university lecturers, colleagues, professionals, other charities, and NGOs with great success. We have had Paralympians, Journalists, and MasterChef winners. We have had people with disabilities, people from the Rainbow Communities, and people from various ethnicities. We have had empowering Women speakers, Mental Health champions, and Linguistics professors. The impact of these sessions goes far beyond the event itself. Attendees often share what they have learned with friends, family, and colleagues through insights they have gained or by modelling new behaviours. This is the ripple effect of change. We are losing. Qualified workers are a must. 🔹 Reduces Disparities and Inequities: Access to quality education is a powerful tool for addressing disparities and inequities within a community. Creating a more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed is critical. 🔹 Fosters Social Cohesion and Inclusion: Education serves as a unifying force that brings people together from diverse backgrounds. Break down the walls. 🔹 Preserves Cultural Heritage: Diverse educational programs help preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage within a community, which is their true identity. 🔹 Strengthens Civic Engagement: Education plays a vital role in empowering individuals to actively participate in civic life and democratic processes, creating citizens who contribute positively to society. 🔹 Supports Health and Well-being: Education is closely linked to improved health outcomes and overall well-being, empowering individuals to make healthier choices and lead fulfilling lives. 🌍 Today is the United Nations World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development which is about highlighting not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. 😍 In light of that I want to bring to your attention the work of IU Group (one of 110 #BCorps headquartered at B Lab Germany) and their campaign #CultureOfEveryone, a tagline which I love! 👏🏽 CEO Sven Schütt explains the importance of such a campaign, which I think is more of a mindset, ‘Tolerance and international understanding are the cornerstones on which our prosperity rests. They enable us to recognise diversity as a strength, to learn new things and to continue to develop. In an increasingly interconnected world where education and knowledge know no borders, it is essential that we remain open to other cultures, ideas and perspectives.'
