Today I spoke on Homes Victoria’s Inclusive Employment Panel with Radhika Ittiel and Will Henderson to discuss the benefits of diversity and inclusion for businesses. With an annual spend of over $300 million each year on maintenance services for social and affordable housing, it’s great to see Homes Victoria championing social procurement in its contracts. Some of my key takeaways from our conversation were: 1. Buy in from leadership is imperative to doing inclusive employment well. 2. Cultural training and awareness is an important first step to encouraging inclusive employment in your workplace, but as Lionel Dukakis pointed out it’s also imperative to then ensure safety and security for your workforce. 3. Building relationships with employment providers will help employers understand and access talent. After such an energising conversation, I’m looking forward to watching our maintenance contractors drive social procurement outcomes through their work. Thanks to the team Rose Tsen, Amelia Marks Danielle Illman and Adele Townsend for hosting us today and providing such a great platform for these discussions! #socialprocurement #sustainableprocurement #inclusiveemployment #homesvic #procurement #learning

A very productive end to last week, as well as a productive start to this week! I met with Stuart Clarke from Your Homes Newcastle, along with Suzanne Jobson from Karbon Homes who are delivering on some fantastic UKSPF strand 2 projects. We discussed how Open Doors, New Starts, and BOOST can support our local communities and create efficient and sustainable referral routes for a stronger employment journey. This week I had the pleasure of meeting with Mary Blackwell who delivers on Northern Directions. We discussed our projects and looked at how we can support each other and our participants with a bespoke employment journey. It is great to meet like minded, passionate people, who want to support our local residents. By working in collaboration, and having the residents at the centre of what we do, we are creating a unique employment offer which suits the journey of each person we engage with. I am looking forward to some more upcoming meetings so Open Doors can begin many more excellent collaborations. I am busy creating a directory of referral options from Open Doors which goes from where we are at strand 1, through to the other strands. This will help us to create the best offer possible for those people who are economically inactive and facing barriers which stop them from engaging in job searching. If you would like to discuss being part of this, please get in touch with me for a discussion on our projects. Creating a feeling of 'oneness' is my vision for our projects! My question is, how well can we work together across North of Tyne Combined Authority? #teamwork #collaboration #newcastle #northtyneside #northumberland #employmentjourney #breakingdownbarriers

Local Councils are a sector often perceived as less appealing, for various reasons including salary usually, than the commercial sector; and yet a lot of smaller councils need to innovate and professionalise to remain viable. A CEO of a large NSW Council shared some of their approaches with me, to attracting and hiring from the private sector. Would love to hear your thoughts? #localcouncils #localgovernment #innovativehiring #strategicrecruitment #executivehire #executivesearch #localgovermentnewsroundup #NSWbusiness #QLDlocalcouncils #canberrabusiness
In a recent conversation with the CEO of a prominent NSW local council, they shared insightful perspectives around talent attraction and accessibility, particularly beneficial for smaller councils. Key insights included: --Emphasising unique value propositions to attract talent particularly from the commercial sector, where perceptions of working for a local council may be less appealing. --Promoting the appeal of steady income and flexibility for individuals with young families, attributes that local councils can offer more readily than a lot of corporate environments. --Adopting outcome-based hiring practices, enabling professionals transitioning from the private sector to potentially work fewer hours for a full-time salary, aligning with agreed and desired outcomes. --Removing constraints for local council staff to engage in additional income streams. --Facilitating access for smaller councils to a pool of experienced professionals through an "employment concierge" model, allowing them to leverage expertise without needing to hire. Within sectors perceived as less attractive, what innovative recruitment strategies approaches have you found to be successful? #localcouncils #localgovernment #innovativehiring #strategicrecruitment #executivehire #executivesearch #localgovermentnewsroundup #NSWbusiness #QLDlocalcouncils #canberrabusiness

The new social housing regulations are set to take effect this week, and will have a significant impact on the sector. These changes have the potential to reshape and transform the housing system and are designed to empower tenants, encourage transparency, and set higher standards for housing providers. The new consumer standards will apply to all social landlords, including both councils and housing associations, and under the new legislation, housing providers are required to: 🔊Ensure tenants' safety in their homes. 🔊Listen to tenants' complaints and promptly address issues. 🔊Be accountable to tenants, treating them fairly and respectfully. 🔊Understand the condition of every home and the needs of its occupants. 🔊Collect and effectively use data across various areas, including repairs. The Regulator for Social Housing (RSH) will actively inspect landlords to ensure compliance with the new standards, with larger landlords being inspected frequently to assess their adherence, and to gather meaningful data related to tenant satisfaction, repairs, and other relevant areas of improvement. The inspections will be conducted in four-year cycles starting from this month, and housing leaders and their dedicated teams are gearing up to meet the challenges ahead. RSH has engaged extensively with tenants, landlords, and other stakeholders during the development of these standards, with over 1,000 people participating in RSH's standards consultation, and more than 50% of responses coming from tenants. The overall response from landlords, tenants and other stakeholders has been positive, with a staunch determination to meet the challenges ahead. Responsive engagement following on from the initial consultations is set to continue, in order to ensure positive momentum in driving transformational change, and ensuring ongoing cases referred by tenants and stakeholders are dealt with effectively. As the housing system adapts, we can expect both challenges and positive changes that are set to overhaul traditional process and practice, improve the current system, with the overall aim of benefitting tenants and the broader community. We look forward to supporting UK housing organisations to meet these challenges, build the right teams to effect the changes, and cement their success in creating a better housing future. If you’d like a confidential chat about how we can support your team to adapt successfully, feel free to get in touch. https://buff.ly/3J8hlDl #socialhousing #regulations #futureofhousing
