Latest on International Bakery: New Bread on the Block Wildfarmed, a regenerative food and farming company, has launched its first range of "life-changing" breads in UK supermarkets. From 1st May, five bread products will be available in Waitrose & Partners, followed by baguettes and flour products launching in June. From naturally delicious sliced white and seeded bread to slow-fermented, hand-crafted sourdoughs, each product is made with Wildfarmed regenerative flour, helping transform lunches and landscapes one slice at a time. The bread aisle sits at the centre of an environmental storm: decades of intensive chemical farming have led to a 69% decline in wildlife, degraded soil and a public health crisis, with half of UK bread containing two or more pesticides linked to health issues. What a wise and provocative essay connecting climate change to what we eat and see at the grocery store. Here are my four favorite lines: "If food waste were a country, it would be somewhere around the world’s third or fourth biggest emitter of carbon." "We have long conceptualized climate change as an industrial crisis, to be solved through a new and green industrial revolution. But in a few decades, we may find ourselves having solved the industrial problems of warming, only to be confronted instead by a persistent set of challenges that seem pre-modern by comparison — how to extract more calories from less land and how to do so without bankrupting the earth and its soils along the way." "...innovation at this scale doesn’t just happen at the snap of a finger. The seedlings tend to bloom only after a decade or two of scientific, political, social and economic germination (and often difficulty)." Mr. Jägermeyr of NASA calls it “the challenge of our generation” — how to save the food system from what he calls a “quadruple squeeze.” First, the problem of productivity and hunger. Second, the risk to ecosystems, under threat from fertilizer runoff deforestation and other pollution. Third, the challenge of nutritional deficiency, as those foods we are growing more of are generally getting worse for us over time. And finally climate, which is driving a “fundamental change across most breadbaskets on the planet,” he says. “It’s pretty complicated,” he admits. “And the scary part is that we have to solve them all.” #leadership #innovation #sustainability
Root Capital’s North Star is building the #resilience and #prosperity of #smallholder farming communities—thanks to David Wallace-Wells at The New York Times for calling out the need for further support to ensure this frontline force for #climateaction can “innovate their way toward greater crop stability and abundance.” I’d argue, and our CASH Coalition peer orgs would agree, that vastly increasing access to #climatefinance is the spear point. And one other thing: while climate-smart agricultural practices may not be a “miracle cure,” they’re an absolutely critical part of the innovation bundle discussed in this piece. Kudos to our colleagues at World Resources Institute for the well-deserved callout, and here’s to all of our partners working in the smallholder climate space. Come join us. https://lnkd.in/eSTqWAFq

For those whose livelihoods depend on food production, though, cataclysm is always on the horizon. In this documentary, Ruth Reichl explores with experts how our systems became broken over the postwar decades and, as several participants say, led to most farmers and ranchers barely breaking even while the big companies that process and distribute their products profited. #foodsystems #foodequity #agricultureandfarming | The New York Times

Hummingbird Wholesale has deep roots in the PNW and offers organic, high-quality, and nutritious foods grown as locally and sustainably as possible. Hummingbird takes great care and pride in creating long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the regional farmers they source from. As part of their Farm Connections Program, Hummingbird finds ways to alleviate burdens and risks for farmers. For example, Hummingbird contracts with farmers upfront, before the planting season, to buy a set amount of a crop at a set price. This gives farmers some assurance against risks, and helps encourage farmers who are thinking of switching from growing something like grass seed to growing food. Hummingbird also became an Employee Owned Purpose Trust in 2023, securing and guiding the mission and values of the business into perpetuity! The OOC is incredibly honored to have received one of the initial USDA Organic Market Development Grant awards and looks forward to working with amazing grant partners, including Hummingbird, to promote Oregon and Washington organic supply chains. #organicmarketdevelopmentgrant #OMDG #OrganicTransitionInitiative #ChooseOrganic #orag #oregonagriculture #organic #real #climatesmart

👏Landmark new report!👏 Alt proteins could displace one sixth to two thirds of meat/dairy consumption in europe, freeing up agricultural land at least the size of the UK and Ireland combined, enabling the area of agroecological farmland to quadruple by 2050, and freeing up lots of land to returned to nature restoration. A really interesting modelling of how alt proteins could go hand in hand with agroecology and restoring nature, and also help improve European food security. #food #meat #plantbased #lessandbettermeat #climatechange #climatecrisis #biglivestock #defundbiglivestock
