"But David already has so many tasks on his plate! Can’t we simplify this workflow a bit?" "Would David find this interface simple and intuitive? Remember, he's not a tech geek!" "But David..." My design leader used to make such statements in meetings (early in my career). Who's David, you ask? I had the same question. It took me a while to grasp that David wasn’t a new team member, but the user persona we had crafted after doing an exhaustive user research! This narrative completely changed my view on personas. Our design leader had this thing of bringing David to life, seating him at the table for every product chat and looping him in on each decision, stressing on aligning with his needs. More than just a card pinned on a board, David was the silent contributor in the room. Yes, we invest heavily in research to sketch out such detailed personas. But is that just a check box ticked during the discovery phase? Or is there more? As designers, we must advocate our users’ behaviors, challenges, ambitions, and give their perspectives a voice across the board. Personas are not just meant for the UX squad; they should resonate across departments. What's the benefit, you might ask? In my experience, decisions in meetings stay on course, and when they veer off-path, personas act as our compass to realign the conversation. Not to mention, some debates can be quickly settled with solid data and research. Real Empathy: 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐳𝐳𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 🌳🔍 When we say "𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐬," it's not just a catchy phrase. 👞👟 It means 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 before designing solutions. Genuine empathy in product design is about the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬. 🧠❤️ While empathy has become a buzzword in product and UX design, its true meaning is often misunderstood. 🤔 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. It requires 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬. 🌍👥 Let me share two eye-opening 👀 experiences that transformed my perspective:💡 1. UX Lead Interview at Lollypop Design Studio: 🎨 During my final interview with design leader Anil Reddy, he asked a powerful question: "Can you travel to remote areas, stay in potentially basic accommodations, and frequently move between locations?" 🚗🏠 This question revealed his commitment to 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 for a rural-focused project. It wasn't just about skills; it was about stepping into the user's world. 🏘️🚗 That reflected the org culture of deep user empathy. This commitment to user-centric design has propelled Lollypop Design Studio to worldwide recognition, proving that 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧. 🏆🌐 2. Shravan Tickoo's Journey Beyond Comfort Zones 🚛: During our latest conversation, he shared an interesting experience. While working on an app for transport, he faced a perplexing challenge: truck drivers were rejecting a new app despite a 30% pay increase offer. 🚛💰 Baffled, he did something radical. He spent two weeks living the trucker life. Bumpy roads, roadside Dhabas, and all. 🛣️☀️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭? Lately,I've realized that... If the foundation of your UX is not strong and well detailed, you will have lots of challenge as a designer. Iterations are normal...but if this is not properly fixed by you or "Oga"...there will be so much back and forth. I was having a chat with my teamates today on a group call and I remembered telling everyone the need to revisit our UX.... something seems to be off! That was the basis for the almost two hours of call three of us had today Khafilat Akinpelu Progress Orishade and myself... Funnily,before the end of the call...we realized some things we neglected due to time constraints...we discovered how pivotal they are to our design process and we are iterating accordingly(still ongoing) Now,this is my concern...I'm aware that most startups want to jump "the gun" and rush to the design part without a detailed UX process (due to funds or possibly time factor). But it got me thinking on how we churn out products without detailed UX...the one we jokingly call "Oga centered design"! I know we want to make money and all...but, ain't we leaving out fundamentals from our products?... I was working on a card sort and other UX processes today, and at the same time wondering how many products go through this thorough research methods... Last year, our team faced a daunting challenge: developing a new product feature under a tight deadline. At first, the task seemed overwhelming, and progress was slow. However, we decided to hold a series of brainstorming sessions where everyone, regardless of their role, could contribute ideas. During one of these sessions, a junior developer suggested an unconventional approach to solving the problem. Initially, it seemed too risky, but as we discussed it further, we realized its potential. Our marketing lead added insights on customer needs, while our UX designer proposed enhancements to make the feature more user-friendly. By the end of the week, we had a clear plan. Everyone had a part to play, and their contributions were invaluable. The result? We not only met our deadline but also exceeded our initial expectations. The feature became a standout success, receiving praise from both customers and industry experts. This experience reinforced the power of collaboration.
