I’m excited to share my thesis, The Edge: A Response to Sea-Level Rise on Vancouver's Coast Through the Design of a Resilient Multi-Habitable Built Environment, which I completed as part of my Master of Architecture at Laurentian University. With many creative problem solvers on this platform, I wanted to share an idea I studied for 8 months, introducing a new typology in architecture: coastal architecture. My research addresses the threat of sea-level rise in Vancouver by proposing a mixed-use residential program along vulnerable coastlines. It explores flood-resilient materials and adaptive design methods to create resilient, multi-habitable spaces that can transition between human and ecological use, ensuring sustainable coexistence. Aside from typology, the design proposes a new form of living by incorporating a chasis to lock up and protect the residents from floods. This approach isn't just relevant for Vancouver; it applies to regions with similar or warmer climates and can serve as an idea for disaster-prone areas like those affected by Hurricane Milton. We also need to prioritize ecosystems in our planning, as they are the foundation of life itself, and build smarter to ensure a sustainable future. There is a lot to learn from what’s around, and translating this knowledge into the built environment will help us create spaces that are not only resilient but also harmonize with nature, ensuring long-term sustainability and protection for communities. Climate Action is the day 16 prompt for #WLAM2024. Landscape Architects have the ability to make a posivite impact through design. The first step to this is having a true understanding of landscape: topography, waterways, wetlands, native stands of vegetation, for example - and not only protect those elements but use them to enhance a design. Personal sunset at Leibniz Universität Hannover. This month I completed my Master's degree in Landscape Architecture. The past three years awakened in me an enthusiasm and passion for this beautiful profession and I am happy, excited and humbled to dedicate my life to it. Thoughts and statement: The program taught me to find a personality for this profession, showed me different ways to understand things independently and scientifically. Now I want to go on journeys, to understand places and their subjects as stories to retell and continue them. The profession is called landscape architecture, but I will give my best to manifest the approach of a phenomenological agent. Key aspects for me are to design biophilic, liveable and pro-social spaces for all living things. In the present age with humankind as a geological force, I describe these spaces as anthroposcences in which we reflect ourselves, our environment and our actions.

Landscape and Architecture... As a Master of Architecture student at The BAC, I am starting my thesis exploration and research. While my thesis is still developing, I am looking into how we can "blur the boundary between interior and exterior" more. As Stan Allen and Marc McQuade discuss in their book Landform Building. I am looking for feedback on why we have not seen more engagement with incorporating landscape, ecology, and natural systems into our buildings and structures. There are many fantastic precedent projects all over the world, such as Bosco Verticale in Milan by Boeri Studio (shown below, image from iStock/Mrkit99). Is it an issue with maintenance, user acceptance, construction cost, rules and regulations, or something else? 

Sediments: Performative Ecologies | Architecture Thesis on Regenerative Architecture ‘Sediments: Performative Ecologies’ is an architecture thesis on regenerative architecture by Valentina Aguilar from the Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño - Universidad de los Andes that offers an architectural solution to the fragmented landscapes in Honda, Colombia, which are shaped by sediments due to local ecologies and weather. The project proposes a Fishing Vertical Bio-Filter Tower, aiming to preserve regional knowledge and restore ecosystems by integrating ecology and history. The project evolves based on sediment movements, river flows, rainfall, and sun exposure. Blending ancient and modern architecture is an art we've passionately explored over the last decade, leading to some truly inspiring discoveries. It all began with simple questions. Our first question was: How did ancient buildings manage heating and cooling without today's technology? We found that ancient builders used natural methods to keep interiors comfortable, incorporating physical laws directly into their designs. We adopted these ideas, focusing on maximizing sunlight, enhancing underground airflow for cooling, and building thick walls that naturally regulate temperature. By integrating these ancient methods with modern materials like energy-efficient windows and various insulation options, we learned to design buildings that naturally heat and cool themselves. This breakthrough led us to explore further, like how ancient civilizations managed clean water and wastewater.
