Our innovative work gives customers the insights they need to increase capacity In the modern age of process refining and distillation, the expectation of column performance is being pushed higher as demands increase. More companies are wanting to increase capacity and throughput for increased yields and improved refinery margins. Using scanning technology, CONDIMONT can optimize tower performance by verifying froth loadings and tower efficiencies while the vessel(s) are under heavy demands. Onsite engineers are being tasked with greater responsibilities to increase unit production which, if not strategically evaluated, could lead to degrading performance issues. By using tower scans to optimize tower performance, the customer can verify internal loadings relative to rate increases. CONDIMONT scanning technology is a gamma transmission technique to capture relative density signatures across the vessel’s internals. This technique identifies several operating conditions associated with tray performance, such as tray damage, flooding, weeping and foaming characteristics. Picture Interpretation: The initial scan at 50% showed tray froth loadings between 58 – 66% of available tray spacing. The second scan at 80% showed tray froth loadings between 75 –84% of available tray spacing. The final scan at 100%-unit throughput showed loadings between 86 – 98% of available tray spacing. During these rate increases, elevated aeration and froth loading was identified. Given these results, the customer was able to modify their liquid/vapor ratio and tower pressure to produce even higher product purities during 100%-unit throughput. With these data sets, the customer was able to isolate each tray’s performance and identify localized limitations in a matter of hours compared to weeks or months of trial-and-error simulations and testing, saving a significant amount of time and money.
