Started the week with some confidence work in session. The more I do trauma therapy the more I realise so much of the work is around unravelling the personal impact not the experince itself. Especially with children and adolescents, talking about the experince is such a small % of the work, I notice how much holding such experiences for often really long periods of time erodes their sense of self in such a important and difficult time away during their developmental years. #traumatherapy #traumarecovery #childhoodtrauma #childdevelopment

Disorganised attachment is an insecure attachment style that arises from inconsistent and unpredictable caregiving, often in environments marked by fear or trauma. Children with disorganised attachment may experience their caregivers as both a source of comfort and a source of fear, leading to confusion and a lack of coherent strategies for seeking support. As adults, individuals with this attachment style often display contradictory behaviors, simultaneously desiring intimacy while fearing it, resulting in patterns of approach-avoidance in relationships. They may struggle with emotional regulation, low self-esteem, and a pervasive fear of abandonment, which can manifest as anxiety or withdrawal in close relationships. Sometimes, kids need us to see what’s underneath the surface. Trauma can manifest in various ways, and children often show signs that may be misunderstood or overlooked. As educators, it's essential to be aware of these signs to offer the appropriate support. Common signs of trauma in children include: Withdrawal or Isolation: Children may avoid interaction, retreating from social activities or classroom discussions. Aggression or Irritability: Trauma can cause heightened sensitivity, leading to outbursts or aggressive behavior in response to perceived threats. Emotional Outbursts: Extreme reactions, such as crying or anger, may occur over seemingly small incidents, reflecting internalized emotional distress. Regressed Behavior: Younger children, in particular, may revert to earlier developmental stages, such as bedwetting or thumb-sucking, when dealing with trauma. Difficulty Concentrating or Learning: Trauma can affect a child’s ability to focus, leading to learning difficulties or academic decline. Physical Symptoms: Some children may express emotional distress through headaches, stomachaches, or other physical ailments. One of Donald Winnicott's most important concepts is « primary maternal preoccupation ». This idea highlights the critical phase during a child’s infancy when a mother becomes deeply attuned to her baby's physical and emotional needs. It’s a natural and essential process that ensures the infant's sense of safety and development. However, when parents are overwhelmed by their own challenges, they may struggle to maintain this necessary preoccupation, which can impact a child's mental and emotional well-being in the long term. Reflecting on this, I think in therapy, Just as a mother meets her child where they are, a therapist must meet the client at their current state—not where they could or should be. By being fully present and attuned to their needs, we strengthen the therapeutic relationship and create a space for meaningful growth and healing. This concept reminds me that the most profound connections, whether between mother and child or therapist and client, begin with genuine presence and care.
