🎥 Today kicks off National Student Transfer Week, and we’re excited to highlight University of California, Santa Cruz's innovative project funded by the new ATI Grant. In this video, Chancellor Cynthia Larive shares how UCSC is working with Hartnell College to enhance transfer support systems for low-income students in the Monterey Bay region. In collaboration with Hartnell College, UCSC is enhancing transfer student support systems to create clear, achievable pathways for low-income students in the Monterey Bay region. This initiative aims to more than double the number of Hartnell students transferring to UCSC over the next five years by providing: 🔹 Targeted advising and peer mentoring 🔹 Clear curricular maps 🔹 Paid internships for career readiness 🔹 Holistic support before, during, and after transfer Over the next five years, the initiative aims to double the number of Hartnell students transferring to UCSC and boost two-year graduation rates. Having worked with Cypress College, the University of the Fraser Valley, and Vanier College for many years, I have gained a clear perspective on the education industry. While many recruiters favour public institutions over private colleges, those of us recruiting for both types of institutions understand that the choice between them is not as critical as it might seem. Universities, like the University of the Fraser Valley, offer degree programs, whereas private career colleges, such as Cypress College in Medicine Hat, focus on skill development and early job placement through practical training. Public colleges, like Vanier College, are equally noteworthy. With their smaller class sizes and dynamic two-year ACS programs with co-op options, they provide valuable education and opportunities. Ultimately, the decision should be based on a student’s career goals rather than social media trends. It is essential to choose a program that aligns with one's professional aspirations rather than being influenced by the latest buzz on Instagram or TikTok.

There are some key points highlighted in this article from Forbes. While it focuses primarily on bachelor’s degree earners, the takeaways are salient for all who need to make a strategic plan for their postsecondary path. College is but one option in the postsecondary world and a few are mentioned at the end of the article. Technical training, community colleges, and micro-credentials (specifically industry-recognized credentials), but graduates might benefit from entering the military or union apprenticeships. The most important takeaway should be that students need to engage in meaningful career exploration in order to build a strategic plan that takes them down the right pathway that builds on their interests, personality, and values.

Raritan Valley Community College partnered with 13 community colleges to launch their new Essential Learning, General Education, and Career Readiness Center for Workforce Innovation (CWI) to help students advance their durable skills. “Colleges are hearing over and over again from employers and industry partners that in addition to job-related skills, employees need to possess ‘soft skills’ or ‘durable skills,’” RVCC Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Karen Bearce, Ph.D., said. “And while students may understand how General Education courses connect to their majors, they rarely recognize how these courses connect to career-readiness, career-preparation, and lifelong learning.” The goals of the new CWI Pathways to Career Initiative include: 📚 Aligning learning outcomes of General Education courses to career-readiness learning to demonstrate how career-readiness skills are embedded into essential learning. 💡 Giving students the tools to develop career-readiness skills across their General Education (essential learning) experience, as well as the ability to implement these career-readiness skills. 🤔 Engaging faculty in workshops to create valuable learning experiences (including experiential learning) that will align General Education learning outcomes with career competencies. By including trade schools and apprenticeships into the standard post secondary planning conversations as viable options. My dream for the higher education side of public administration in Wisconsin: - The existing UW Oshkosh, UW Green Bay, and UW Milwaukee MPA programs form a single system wide MPA program. - UW LaCrosse, who has a great undergrad PA program, also becomes part of the system-wide MPA program. - We create accelerated 4+1 programs that connect undergraduate majors across system schools to the system-wide MPA program so that students can obtain an in-demand credential that sets them up for career success. - We create a statewide advisory board of public service professionals to ensure our offerings match workforce needs. - We create a statewide internship program that gives our students resume-building skills, provides needed work for state and local governments, and strengthens the student to career pipeline. - We establish an applied research center attached to the system-wide MPA program to provide research, trainings, and customized services to government entities throughout Wisconsin. I've thought about ways to accomplish this, there are always piecemeal agreements and MOUs we can pursue, but I think legislation is ultimately how we could get there. I'm sure there are flaws in my logic, but doesn't it make sense to: - Build more career pathways for liberal arts undergrads? - Incentivize collaboration for programs in a common system as opposed to perpetual competition between under-resourced programs? - Provide a vehicle for research based solutions for Wisconsin governments? - Focus the talent in our university system towards making a practical visible impact on communities across Wisconsin? Let's bust down these silos.
