POV: You work as a hot dog vendor in NYC….🌭 I’m on a mission to build the world’s longest resume. This is what I learned while working as a hot dog vendor for a day: 1. Being a vendor in NYC is…complicated. Without question, you need a permit in order to be a vendor within city limits. However, over the years NYC has gone back and forth with how strict they have been, resulting in lots of illegal vendors, which ultimately punishes those individuals trying to follow the rules. 2. A good location can come with good results, however we must keep in mind the cost of operations. Dan said that by the time he’s done buying the food, paying for staff, and other misc. costs, he’s not left with much at all. 3. Typically when you’re issued a permit as a vendor, it comes with your location that you’ve applied for. A permit in Dans location outside the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art costs over $100,000, while less desirable locations are much more manageable. However, if you’re a disabled veteran, you’re able to get a location within the public parks without needing to pay for that permit (you still need the food safety and food permits though). To be honest, it’s all very complex and is part of the reason why Dan has to sleep in his van every night. For more context, I purchased Dans memoir which I will link below, which gave me more clarity on just how messed up vending permits are in NYC. First responder patch walls: an immediate indicator of my kind of place!! For a frequent traveler like myself, it’s hard sometimes to know where to eat. Yelp reviews are often gamed; Google reviews are occasionally unintelligible; Tripadvisor reviews are dated. The bat signal for good food often goes to the place with a prominent first responder patch wall near the entrance. I have yet to be disappointed by a #firstresponder friendly establishment. These places are often locally owned, although chains like Bojangles' Restaurants, Inc., Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q, Chick-fil-A Restaurants, and of course Firehouse Subs also deserve recognition for their unique and public support of first responders. These businesses value their relationships with their police, firefighters, and EMS personnel, often going the extra mile even when public pressure is on. The patch wall is an immediate symbol of this support. As a #lawenforcement officer, I am immediately in a better place when I walk in and see the patch wall. I can feel more confident that the clerk isn’t going to refuse to serve me (as we’ve occasionally seen or heard about). I feel better about not getting the “special sauce” aka, spit or worse in my food. These places are special. Oftentimes in talking with the waitstaff, I’ve learned that these restaurants are the cop hangouts or the spot where the EMS crew comes near the end of their 24-hour shift to grab breakfast and celebrate getting off. Many times, a cousin, brother, uncle, or dad is in the fire service and the patch wall is a direct reflection of the staff’s pride in their family member. As shown in the picture, this first responder family member really is thought of as a hero to that business. As we approach 9/11, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to all the businesses that have been good to me over the years. These are the places I continue to patronize and I’m confident that they’ll be around for years and years if we as first responders give back to them like they’ve given back to us. Thanks again “patch wall places”; if you don’t have my agency patch already, I’ll have one with me the next time I pop in. Photo: Hometown Grill & Buffet, Staunton, Virginia

Working as a waiter is a major eye opener. Same goes for IT Helpdesk #support. I have held both those positions and learned a ton about #superiority complexes. While not at the top of the "food chain", both waiters and Helpdesk agents are critical to keeping the business operational. In both roles, I've learned that even the seemingly "low-level" positions are essential. Apparently, not common knowledge. Maybe those who acted superior never held a junior role. Maybe they think they are the best thing since sliced bread. 🤷♂️ Don't know and don't care. Fact remains, I always try to befriend my waiter and local #IT help. Besides for basic human curtesy, having them on your side can be super helpful. #essentialroles #careerdevelopment #everycogmatters #helpdesk

So, I got my family KFC last night. I ordered online and then waited in the lobby for food to be done. Got some killer deals for ordering online. But sitting in the lobby it made me think. When I was a kid the lobbies of restaurants always seemed busy. They had tables, condiments, free refills, Wendy's had a salad bar, McDonalds had a playplace, Burger king had a … worse playplace. But now they're empty desolate places where Ubereats/Doordash drivers and people who ordered online wait for orders. There are benefits of eating food at the restaurants that make the food such as the food coming out hot and fresh, if your order isn't right you can get it corrected quickly, and best of all you don't have to clean up your kitchen! The trash from the food gets thrown away in the restaurant so no fry containers ending up in weird places. (I have a toddler and 2 teenagers so...yeah this is a reality for me) Next time our family decides to eat fast-food as a meal we are going to sit in the lobby. Try to bring some life back into those once loved spaces. I'm sure our toddler would love to stretch her legs in a play place while driving between SF and LA. Did you think this post was only going to be about fast-food? NOPE its also about offices. With the rise of WFH people got back hours of their lives in commute time giving them time to rediscovery hobbies only dreamed about on commute home. It also meant spending more time with family, friends, and pets. But working in an office does have some benefits such as making friends, physically being able to bug someone about feedback, and technical expertise osmosis. Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement or diffusion of solvent molecules (information) through a selectively-permeable membrane (Ears & Eyes) from a region of high water potential (expertise) to a region of low water potential (expertise.) Do we need to bring back 100% office? No absolutely not. But what I am saying is it has its benefits. Just like eating food at the place that prepared it. Did you think the post was over? Joke's on you! Its actually about how I specialize in recruiting fantastic researchers for Biotech, Pharma, Environmental, and Food companies. If you need help finding great candidates or just help sifting through your four thousand applicants we have a plan to help you! #fastfood #biotech #RTO

"Don't Crash the Kitchen" 👨🍳 I used to be a kitchen supervisor at an Applebee's (jealous much?), fresh out of high school, as I tried to figure out what to do with my life. Who would have known that those few years there would form some life long lessons for me? I was in charge of firing all of the food and assembling it to give back to the expediter. I was essentially Project Managing the kitchen line. Often I would be on the line on my own, during a slow period. We would unexpectedly get a rush of orders, and I would insist that I had everything under control. But it was often already too late when other kitchen staff or a manager would have to come in and save the day from the mess I had created. I thought I could prove myself. I thought I HAD to prove myself. My ego and insecurity wouldn't allow me to ask for help, and I actually thought I was doing a good thing; by not alarming my team or asking for support in things I could take care of. My 'good intentions' had the exact opposite effect. I pissed off my team, my managers, the expediters, and the servers. And no surprise then that that pissed off the customers. All of this, because I didn't ask for help - it had a ripple effect on the whole restaurant! I 'Crashed the Kitchen.' So even though I am very far removed from the restaurant industry (for everyone's benefit), this phrase is continuously said at our work. It is never failure to ask for help. It's a failure if you don't. "DON'T CRASH THE KITCHEN." From this came several lessons and takeaways of me that have impact to this day. - Don't be a hero. - Your mistake can have a butterfly effect on others. There's no shame in asking for help. - Don't ask for help when you're already overwhelmed. Recognize and communicate when you feel you're getting close to a problem. It's way easier to prevent a fire than to put one out. - You can get amazing experiences for your life career, even if you're not in the right job or industry. - I can make a pretty solid Quesadilla hashtag #worklessons #Values #DontCrashTheKitchen

🚨🚨 New York restaurant hires cashiers in the Philippines for $3 an hour via Zoom to combat the shrinking fast food workforce. 🤷🏽♂️ “When the virtual assistants are not helping customers, they coordinate food delivery orders, take phone calls and oversee the restaurants’ online review pages, Mr. Zhang said. They can take food orders, but they can’t manage cash transactions.” - Chi Zhang, 34, the founder of Happy Cashier, a virtual-assistant company What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this is an effective solution to a shrinking US food industry staffing issues? Couldn’t they just get a kiosk? #restauranttech #restaurantnews #linkedup #news #tech #food #restaurant Read more about it here:

There are many benefits to hiring a caterer! Here are just a few: 1) Sunken costs and food waste can occur when you buy (and overbuy) your own ingredients; 2) You lose time to do what you are best at professionally; and 3) Various dietary requirements of your guests are cared for and protected.
