On March 12, the European Parliament adopted a revised version of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption in EU's building sector. The directive also aims to renovate worst-performing buildings and improve information-sharing on energy performance. Moreover, much of Europe's grid infrastructure is outdated, ill-equipped for modern low-carbon energy demands. Bureaucratic delays in planning and approving new projects further impede progress. My conference contribution will address "Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production from Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Abundant Agricultural Residues", as investigated in our EU project CIRCULAIR. Similar to other pathways that combine green hydrogen with advanced biomass conversion (such as PBtL), CIRCULAIR aims at a step-change in the utilization of limited biogenic feedstock via co-production of synthetic fuels. Hydrothermal liquefaction is especially suited for wet biomasses, such as sewage sludge or manures, and may unlock much needed additional feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel production. www.project-circulair.eu
