THE DEATH OF S.S. UNITED STATES, THE FASTEST PASSENGER SHIP IN WORLD HISTORY
CAN IT BE SAVED?
On November 14, 2024, tugs boats will be attaching their lines to S.S. United States, the fastest passenger ship in history, and will guide her from pier 82 to pier 80 in South Philadelphia; the next day, on November 15th, around 7 am, she will be maneuvered from the port into the Delaware River at low tide. (She is so enormous that her main stack will not clear under the bridges otherwise); she will head down the Delaware River to Delaware Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. She will be tugged to Mobile, Alabama to be scuttled. Eventually, this ocean liner - "Queen of the Sea" - will be sunk in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Okaloosa County Commissioners in Florida acquired the title to this majestic ship, and a decision has been made to transform it into a coral reef. No one was able to make S.S. United States into a maritime museum or a floating hotel or some other business enterprise.
Where’s the U.S. Maritime Administration to put the brakes on disposal pending a review of further service potential? Why couldn't the Department of Defense or the U.S. Navy use this magnificent ship in service of current and future capabilities?
With minimal investment from industry or government the S.S. United States could be preserved for the sake of the American people.
