Meditation is transforming mental health, but fascinating new research shows it could also alter our consciousness and redefine our sense of self. The team at Massachusetts General and Harvard's Meditation Research Program is employing advanced neuroimaging techniques to investigate deep meditative states, providing critical insights into consciousness and brain function in advanced meditators. This latest research wave aligns with growing interest in altered states of consciousness, particularly psychedelic research. Both fields explore profound mental shifts, deepen our understanding of the human mind, and could lead to some of the most exciting breakthroughs in mental health of our lifetime. Excited for the possibilities that research will unlock 🧘♂️✨ Read the article here: https://buff.ly/3RMaYK7 #MentalHealth #Consciousness #Meditation

Great new article by Matthew Sacchet and Judson Brewer in the latest edition of Scientific American on the 3rd wave of meditation science and research, focusing on advanced meditation. "In the media and in academia, meditation is often seen as a tool primarily for managing the stresses of modern life and work. But our research suggests it can be used for much more. Although meditation can help people improve their psychological well-being, it also can be a gateway to experiences that lead to deep psychological transformation." https://lnkd.in/gkC2iyN7

Hope often flies under the radar as a psychological tool, overshadowed by mindfulness and other mental practices. But new research suggests that hope—a belief in the possibility of positive outcomes—can have a profound impact on mental well-being, resilience, and motivation. Unlike mindfulness, which focuses on present awareness, hope looks forward, guiding us toward possibilities and inspiring action, even in the face of adversity. It’s not just wishful thinking; it’s an active engagement with the future. For leaders and coaches, fostering hope within teams can be a game-changer. It aligns vision with possibility, encouraging individuals to embrace challenges and persevere through setbacks. By cultivating an environment where hope thrives, we can unlock higher levels of performance, creativity, and resilience. As we guide our teams, let’s remember: hope isn’t passive—it’s a powerful, forward-moving force that can shape outcomes and create lasting impact. https://lnkd.in/d2kknMS4

We believe that advanced meditation has potentially broad implications for people’s understanding of what it means to be human and for interventions for mental health and well-being, and it therefore deserves the attention of the scientific community. Advanced meditation holds significant and untapped opportunities to diminish suffering and help people flourish. It may even provide a gateway to entirely new ways of understanding our basic humanity. https://lnkd.in/gyRTrDqp

Since I read Sebastian Junger's "In My Time of Dying" -- a compelling first-person narrative of his near-death experience and his attempt to explain it in scientific terms -- I've become interested in reading more about the nature of consciousness. There's a fascinating article in this month's Scientific American called "Advanced Meditation Alters Consciousness and Our Basic Sense of Self." The piece discusses "cessation events," which seem to be temporary meditation-induced lapses in consciousness. Wild! Here's an excerpt: "The lowest levels of alpha power and connectivity occurred immediately before and after cessation. The results of this study are consistent with the suggestion that this type of meditation diminishes hierarchical predictive processing—that is, the mind’s tendency to predict and rank self-related narratives and beliefs. The cessation process can ultimately result in the absence of consciousness and the emergence of a deeply present form of awareness and thought that accepts whatever arises, whether positive or negative. Our findings provide preliminary insight into the mechanisms underlying the highly unusual capacity to induce a momentary lapse of consciousness during cessations, suggesting it involves measurable changes in brain activity." The piece goes on to speculate about therapeutic uses of this advanced meditative state, possibly similar to those offered by psychedelics. Full article: https://lnkd.in/eXdE6XXw

Do you consider yourself an 'advanced mediator'? Do you regularly experience ego dissolution through meditation? Do you experience physical energetic waves and currents flowing through deep meditative states? After beginning to meditate a few years ago, meditation caused a shift in awareness in my experience that I later learned was a classic kundalini awakening. It was very difficult sticking the landing. This shift led me to intentional and ceremonial use of entheogens which enabled me to slowly unravel the sensemaking needed to fully function between these non ordinary states of consciousness and this consensus reality. This article sheds some light on the mystery of advanced meditation, and shows how, despite thousands of years of practice across cultures, we're just getting started in laying a foundation of understanding on how deep meditation can profoundly shift our human experience and deliver gifts beyond what our mortal egoic minds think possible. Much ❤️ 🙏 #consciousness #meditation #nonduality #love

🌱 Unlocking the power of science-embodiment fusion 🌱 Bridging the gap: exploring the intersection of researchers and practitioners in the field of #embodiment. It became an heartwarming journey together with Marbella Pérez-Peña. She does not only feel as a colleague in the field of embodiment but also as a friend. Her #PdD became a piece of art within our field. It was my pleasure to sharing online personal gatherings with such a wonderful researcher for about 2 years. Our monthly interactions have fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, where theory and practice converge to illuminate new pathways forward. I Feel, therefor I Am: An investigation on mindfulness; body awareness, and emotion regulation in youth, is the title of Marbella Pérez-Peña PhD. Some insights of her research: 🌱 reduction of anxiety and arousal is key. 🌱 body awareness is important in order to be able to feel emotions 🌱 dealing with emotions is about being aware, acceptance and clarity Mindfulness has impact on mental health and increased body awareness. But, there is so much more to share.... Feeling grateful of being able to attend the evolution of scientific research within the field of embodiment in the academic community and having the privilege of lending my expertise to the advancement of embodiment scholarship. #embodiment #scientificresearch #mindfulness #leadershipembodiment #changeconsultancy #interdisciplinarycollaboration
