"How do you come up with your documentary topics?"
It’s a question I get all the time, and my answer is always the same: if you tackle the most important issues, the stories remain relevant, and there’s always an opportunity to follow up.
Tonight’s big update on one of our WRAL documentaries is a perfect example.
🚨 Major Development 🚨
For the past two years, the WRAL Doc Unit has been pushing for answers about ReBuild NC, the state agency tasked with helping victims of Hurricanes Matthew and Florence rebuild their homes.
After years of delays, with 1,600 storm survivors still waiting to return home, and a $300 million deficit reported earlier this week, Laura Hogshead, the head of ReBuild NC, is officially out of a job.
The clip below is from our Aftermath documentary, where we asked the critical question two years ago: Why was she still in charge despite the agency's ongoing failures?
This update highlights why investigative journalism and storytelling through documentaries matter. It’s about accountability, impact, and making sure important stories don’t get buried.

🌍 Navigating the Complexities of Filmmaking in Conflict Zones 🎥
As a director and producer, my journey has taken me to the frontlines of some of the most challenging environments, particularly during the fight against ISIS. Each assignment is fraught with unpredictability, demanding a balance between strategic planning and on-the-spot adaptation.
During my time in these regions, I was determined to focus on the human stories that often get overshadowed by the chaos of conflict. Instead of merely documenting military engagements, I sought to highlight the voices of displaced individuals who had endured unimaginable hardships.
One poignant experience involved visiting a school that served as a shelter for families. Amidst the remnants of their lives—children's toys, medical supplies, and personal belongings—I was reminded of the deep emotional toll of war. I always carried small treats like chocolates to share with the children, offering a moment of joy amidst their struggles.
These experiences have profoundly shaped my approach to storytelling. I aim not only to convey events but to evoke empathy and understanding in my audience. I often find myself pondering the impact of conflict on families: How many lives are lost? How many children are left without parents?
To my fellow filmmakers and creatives, let’s strive to illuminate the personal narratives hidden within larger events. Our work can bridge gaps, foster compassion, and remind us of our shared humanity.
