We invite you to read the third column of The Network by our operational partner in Brazil, Natanael Leitão, as he continues to explore the fresh and promising Brazilian biotech ecosystem. Take a look! According to the @Brazilian Association of Science Parks and Business Incubators (in portuguese, Anprotec), Brazil has 363 business incubators, 43 operational technology parks, 60 in planning or under development and 57 startup accelerators. In biotechnology, beyond the aforementioned Biominas and Cietec (cited as pioneers in our first post about the Brazilian Biotech Ecosystem), the region of Piracicaba stands out as an innovation hub in agribusiness, host of Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture and incubators like Esalqtec, AgTech Innovation (PWC), and Pulse (Raízen); in Ribeirão Preto, there is the Supera Parque incubator and the University of São Paulo. Campinas is home of University of Campinas, AptaHub and Inova Unicamp. The city of São Paulo hosts Eretz.bio, an organization supported by the Albert Einstein Hospital, focused on developing startups with solutions for the health sector. Recently, IPT Open brought together over 125 institutional players, including Service Partners, Investors, Corporations, Funding Agencies, Universities, Government Entities, and startups, aiming to create the main Innovation Hub in Latin America. In 2018, one initiative called BiotechTown emerged in Minas Gerais as one of the most ambitious initiatives dedicated exclusively to biotechnology, and invested $2 million in 31 early-stage startups. Besides financial investment, they also offered open lab infrastructure for R&D, addressing a latent need in the biotechnology ecosystem. Unfortunately, the initiative was short-lived, and the company suspended its activities in 2023 without providing formal reasons to the market. Among the organizations supporting entrepreneurship, Sebrae, along with the pioneering Emerge and Wylinka, are dedicated to promoting entrepreneurial education for scientists and bridging the gap between scientific research and the end market. Last year, Cubo, a Fintech hub associated with Itaú Bank, began paying attention to the biotechnology startups and might be preparing to ride the wave of the sector that attracted the most financial capital in the U.S. in 2023.
